Description

Only 150 miles west of Dar es Salaam lies the mighty Selous Game Reserve, one of Africa’s least known yet wildest conservation areas. Selous is almost twice the size of Belgium and four times larger than the famous Serengeti in the north of Tanzania and covers five per cent of the country's land area. The Selous’ ecosystem as a whole is made up of a few conservation areas and the Kilombero game controlled area and on this great four day safari you will get to appreciate everything about this pristine wilderness which is devoid of human influence.

Day 1
Dar es Salaam to Selous

Your safari tour begins in the centre of bustling Dar es Salaam, the biggest city in Tanzania. Travel out of the city in your 4x4 safari vehicle and drive west from the sea to the Selous Game Reserve. Enjoy a late lunch at the Rufiji River Camp before taking an afternoon game drive in the reserve, and then return to the camp at sunset for dinner and overnight.

Day 2
Selous

Enjoy a full day game viewing in the Selous reserve. You will be taken on some classic game drives - exploring the bush in open 4 x 4 vehicles. Waterbuck, southern reed buck and bushbuck are common in the Selous. Also rare sable antelope, lion and greater kudu also frequent this area.

Day 3
Selous

After breakfast, join an armed ranger on a waking safari in the reserve. The sights, sounds and even the smells of a walking safari are a special treat that will live long in your memory. The thrill of creeping up to animals to “shoot” them with your camera is a great experience. In the afternoon, enjoy a boat safari where you will explore the different channels and lakes of the Rufiji River system, surrounded by hippos and crocodiles. A large variety of herons, storks, ducks, stilts, and other water birds may be seen. And you will also see giraffe and elephants.

Day 4
Selous to Dar es Salaam

This may be the last day of your short safari holiday but there is another organised game drive in the morning before you pack up and leave Selous Game Reserve. Early lunch at the camp, before driving back to Dar es Salaam to be dropped off in the city centre where you can continue your African adventure or begin your journey home

Flight cancelled at 8 hours notice and rerouted via Turkish Airlines which lead to our baggage arriving 5 days later. Not your problem though.

Portswood Hotel in Cape Town - avoid rooms on Mezzanine Floor especially Room 203 as you can hear canned music in lobby. Complained and problem solved. Otherwise hotel good value

For connecting KLM flights hold luggage does not need to be collected between flights. Our stopover hotel was further from the airport than expected, would have preferred a hotel closer to the terminal.

Only minor hiccup was that I didn't get diabetic meals as requested, but that is a taste preference not a medical need, so no real issue.
