Craters and Valleys Safari

Description

A safari adventure is a must during any visit to Africa and they don't come much better than this Craters and Valleys trip, during which you visit two great game viewing areas in the shadow of majestic Mt Kilimanjaro. First stop is the beautiful Tarangire National Park, where you stay in a tented camp, then it's off to the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater to stay in a farmhouse or lodge. Both of these destinations are teeming with wildlife and offer the perfect safari experience.

Day 1
Kilimanjaro to Tarangire

After your morning arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport you are picked up and driven to Tarangire National Park for your stay at Lake Burunge Tented Camp, which is situated on the western border of the park. Deriving its name from the river which winds its way through the park, Tarangire is a complex mixture of grasslands, flood plains and scenic river, as well as having thousands of baobab trees. Arrive at your camp in time for lunch followed by a walk to the lake escorted by a Masai tribesman. Later enjoy dinner under the stars.

Day 2
Tarangire

After breakfast you begin a full day game drive in Tarangire National Park, returning to the camp before sunset. South of Lake Manyara and 80 miles from Arusha, this is a delightful, untamed gem of a park. It abounds with game and the numerous wide-bowed baobab trees create a lasting impression. Tarangire is at its finest during the dry seasons when the river and various swamps provide a lifeline to thousands of species. This area is best for oryx, wildebeest, zebra, elephant and eland and leopards and massive pythons are also found here.

Day 3
Tarangire to Ngorongoro

This morning after breakfast you say farewell to Tarangire and head for Lake Manyara National Park enjoying a picnic lunch along the way. Then you are taken on a game drive in the park seeing lots of the animals when they are at their most active. In the afternoon continue to the Karatu area and arrive at either your farmhouse accommodation or the Tloma Lodge. The rest of the day is free for you to relax in your new surroundings and enjoy another dinner and spectacular African sunset.

Day 4
Ngorongoro

A highlight awaits you this morning as you leave your lodge with a picnic lunch to explore what is commonly referred to as the World’s largest wildlife zoo. After breakfast, you descend through the early morning mists 2,000 feet into the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Due to its size and diversity, the crater floor is made up of distinct areas, ranging from forest, swamps, lakes and springs, to open grassland and sandy dunes. It’s an awesome wildlife experience. Late afternoon return to the lodge in Karatu for dinner.

Day 5
Depart to Arusha

You wonderful safari experience, during which you will have had every chance of seeing the Big Five - lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino - comes to an end today when you are picked up at Karatu and driven to Arusha where you are dropped off either at a hotel in the town or at Kilimanjaro Airport to connect to an onward flight or begin your journey home. This wonderful safari break in two of Africa's best game viewing areas will leave you with lots of great memories.

Portswood Hotel in Cape Town - avoid rooms on Mezzanine Floor especially Room 203 as you can hear canned music in lobby. Complained and problem solved. Otherwise hotel good value

For connecting KLM flights hold luggage does not need to be collected between flights. Our stopover hotel was further from the airport than expected, would have preferred a hotel closer to the terminal.

Only minor hiccup was that I didn't get diabetic meals as requested, but that is a taste preference not a medical need, so no real issue.

Flew to Dar Es Salaam

I was provided with such a good service by Lucy last year when travelling to Brazil and her colleague Harley again gave me a great service when buying flights to Tanzania. I didn't even bother to shop around. The fact that I wasn't met by an automated service is worth a lot to me.
