Scenic Kwazulu Natal & the Garden Route

Description

This two-week tour takes you through some of the most spectacular scenery South Africa has to offer, from magnificent mountains to atmospheric caves, through lush vineyards, wetlands and savannahs. You'll hear thrilling stories of epic battles, get up close to wild animals in their natural habitat, enjoy wine tastings and gourmet meals and have plenty of time to relax on this memorable adventure.

Day 1
Durban to the Drakensberg

Your tour begins this morning as you depart Durban and travel inland to Pietermaritzburg, the administrative capital of the KwaZulu-Natal province. Here you'll enjoy a brief city tour, before continuing on to Howick, through the picturesque farmland and charming small towns of the Natal Midlands. After visiting the site where Nelson Mandela was captured on 5 August 1962 you'll continue on to your hotel and have some time to relax before dinner.

Day 2
The Drakensberg

Today you'll explore the magnificent scenery of the Drakensberg, including the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its exceptional natural beauty and the diversity of its wildlife. You'll head to the Giant's Castle mountain peak, then take a 45-minute walk to the main caves to see the impressive bushman artworks. Back at your hotel, you'll spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing and enjoying the tennis courts, animal farm, aviary, hiking trails, bowling green and swimming pool.

Day 3
The Drakensberg to the Battlefields

After breakfast this morning you'll head to the summit of Spioenkop Mountain, where your guide will tell the story of the nine-day Anglo-Boer battle which took place here in January 1900. From here you'll continue to the town of Ladysmith, which became infamous when it was besieged for 118 days during the Anglo-Boer War. Here you'll visit the Siege Museum to learn more about this period before continuing to your hotel, where you'll enjoy dinner.

Day 4
The Battlefields

Today you'll explore the most famous battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal. Your guide will tell the tale of the Anglo-Zulu battle of Isandlwana, where 20,000 Zulu warriors wiped out almost an entire British regiment, and you'll visit Rorke's Drift, where British soldiers, outnumbered 35 to one, fought off 4,000 Zulus for 12 hours. This battle led to the award of 11 Victoria Crosses – the highest number ever awarded to a regiment in a single action. From here you'll return to your hotel for dinner.

Day 5
The Battlefields to Hluhluwe

After an early breakfast this morning you'll travel to Hluhluwe, where you'll enjoy lunch before an afternoon game drive, during which you can expect to see all the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros), as well as a huge range of birds. You'll return to your lodge for dinner.

Day 6
Hluhluwe

You'll start today with an early-morning game drive to see the animals at their liveliest, before returning to the lodge for breakfast. You'll then have time at leisure to enjoy the lodge's facilities, including the spa, before ending the day with another open-vehicle game drive or a leisurely sundowner cruise on the St Lucia wetlands – a World Heritage Site where you may spot crocodiles and hippos.

Day 7
Hluhluwe to Cape Town

You'll enjoy a final game drive before breakfast this morning, then travel back to Durban for your flight to Cape Town, where you'll be met and transferred to your hotel, with the remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 8

You'll depart Cape Town after breakfast this morning, travelling through the Hottentots-Holland Mountains via Sir Lowry's Pass, enjoying the spectacularly beautiful landscapes along the way. Your first stop is at the Hamilton Russell Vineyards, near Hermanus, for a tour and tasting. If you're visiting between June and December, you'll also stop in Hermanus to watch the whales from the cliff path, and perhaps take a whale-watching boat trip. If you're travelling outside whale season, you have the option of an eco-marine boat trip. After lunch you'll continue to Swellendam, the third-oldest settlement in South Africa, where you'll enjoy dinner at your hotel.

Day 9
Swellendam to Plettenberg

After a leisurely breakfast this morning you'll depart Swellendam and enjoy your scenic journey along the Garden Route via Mossel Bay. You'll stop at the millionaires' playground of Plettenberg Bay for lunch and a stroll along the white sandy beaches, before checking into your accommodation in the afternoon.

Day 10
Plettenberg

After breakfast, you'll have the chance for some unforgettable encounters at the local Elephant Sanctuary, where you'll be able to touch, feed and photograph the elephants. After lunch, you'll head to the stunning Tsitsikamma National Park, where you'll stroll along the suspension bridge across the Storms River to enjoy the incredible views. Afterwards you'll have time at leisure to explore the town of Plettenberg Bay, before returning to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Day 11
Plettenberg to Oudtshoorn

This morning you'll depart from Plettenberg Bay and head to the attractive town of Knysna, situated on the side of a lagoon. Day 12
Oudtshoorn to Cape Town

This morning you'll visit the awe-inspiring Cango Caves, one of the natural wonders of the world, before travelling along the famous Route 62 to Cape Town. Along the way you can relax and enjoy the spectacularly colourful, and ever-changing, views of mountains, rivers, vineyards and orchards. You'll stop for lunch before continuing to Cape Town, where you'll check into your hotel and enjoy a relaxed evening at leisure.

Day 13
Cape Town

Today you'll enjoy a full-day Cape Point and Peninsula tour. You'll travel along the Atlantic Seaboard via Sea Point, Clifton and Camps Bay, stopping at a Llandudno look-out point before continuing to Hout Bay, a picturesque coastal village with magnificent mountain views, where you can take an optional boat trip to Seal Island. From here you'll continue via Chapman's Peak, one of the world's most breathtaking coastal drives, to Cape Point and the Good Hope Nature Reserve. After lunch at a local restaurant, you'll continue to the historic village of Simon's Town, which boasts charming Victorian architecture and a large penguin colony at the beautiful Boulders Beach. Finally you'll visit the lush Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, before returning to your hotel.

Day 14
Cape Town

You'll spend today exploring the Cape Winelands, travelling through magnificent mountain ranges, vineyards and Cape Dutch homesteads to Stellenbosch for your first wine tasting of the day. Both flights were good. Virgin Atlantic planes were virtually new 787-9, so seats comfortable, TV screens a good size and I think we had more leg room. Altogether VERY satisfactory.

Eric was incredibly helpful and went out of his way to help me organise my group trip to South Africa. Without him it would have been incredibly difficult to get it off the ground (no pun intended). Definitely using him and DialAFlight in the future!

Need to be very careful with Europcar! I handed in a written report when I handed the car back - fortunately I had the same witness when I collected and returned the car. The employee who inspected the car when I returned it said I had cracked the windscreen, hidden by the windscreen wipers.

It was recommended that the A380 seating in Economy was adequate for someone who is 6ft 3in. This was not so which led to an uncomfortable 11hr flight for my husband. Overall we are very happy with DialAFlight. This was just a recommendation that did not work out. Maybe don't advise people that Economy is adequate for very tall people.

As a regular DialAFlight customer I helped my mother-in-law and her friend ( both in their 80's) to book their dream trip to South Africa. They were delighted with all aspects of the service. They stayed in some lovely properties and enjoyed private transfers all for approx 20% less than they had been quoted by Kuoni. They appreciated the personal touches such as the call from Mitch a couple of days before departure to check all was OK. They are now plannning their next trip!
