Rovos Rail Cape Town to Victoria Falls

Description

If you want to take one of the world's ultimate luxurious train journeys then this seven day trip from Cape Town to the majestic Victoria Falls takes some beating. After making time to explore South Africa's beautiful coastal city you board your train and begin a memorable journey north stopping to tour Kimberley and Pretoria before travelling through Botswana and Zimbabwe and arriving at the Falls. Meals are served in the train's elegant dining car and you will see memorable sights all along the route.

Day 1
Depart Cape Town

You've explored Cape Town, taken a trip to the top of Table Mountain, shopped at the plush Victoria and Alfred waterfront, and taken a trip out to the Cape of Good Hope . . . now it's time to board your luxurious Rovos Rail train which is waiting at Platform 23 at the city's main station. Settle in and relax as you travel inland through the winelands. Lunch is served in the dining car before you stop and visit the historical village of Matjiesfontein. Then return to the train and look forward to tonight's first dinner on board.

Day 2
Kimberley

Breakfast and lunch are served on board as the train heads north and in the early afternoon you arrive in the famous diamond town of Kimberley. Here you leave the train and are taken on a bus tour of the area stopping at the fascinating Diamond Mine Museum and the extraordinary Big Hole. Return to the train in the early evening and another sumptuous dinner is served in the elegant dining car as you travel on towards your next destination, the town of Pretoria.

Day 3
Pretoria

Lots to see from the windows of your carriage after breakfast as the train travels via Krugersdorp and the huge city of Johannesburg and then through the goldfields of the Witwatersrand towards Pretoria, where you arrive around noon at the Rovos Rail Station in Capital Park. You will be picked up here and driven to your hotel in the city for a one night stay. There are lots of organised tours of the area that can be arranged during your stop or you can explore on your own.

Day 4
Depart Pretoria

You are collected from your hotel this morning and driven back across the city to your waiting train which leaves Pretoria Station at around 9.30 and travels through the goldfields of Gauteng. Lunch is served en route to Zeerust and before and after your meal you can relax and watch the scenery go by. Dinner is served as the train heads towards Mafikeng where you complete all the border formalities before entering into the neighbouring country of Botswana.

Day 5
Botswana

Enjoy breakfast as your train continues travelling north through Botswana's capital city, Gaborone. Then before and after lunch watch out for wildlife as you glide across Botswana. Tomorrow you will be taken on a game drive to see the wildlife close up, but there is also great viewing to be had from the comfort of your carriage. Dinner is served on the way to Plumtree and it is here that you cross over the border into Zimbabwe making an overnight stop at Mpopoma.

Day 6
Zimbabwe

Today you can enjoy relaxing on the train before being taken of a memorable game drive at The Hide. On this safari experience you may see some or all of the Big Five - lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant - and many other wild animals and birds. Make the most of your final dinner back on board tonight which you can enjoy while the train stops overnight at Thompson's Junction. Tomorrow you reach the 'end of the line' when you arrive at Victoria Falls station.

Day 7
Arrive Victoria Falls

The Rovos Rail train leaves Thompson's Junction early this morning so you can enjoy a leisurely breakfast on the way to Victoria Falls. On arrival you say farewell to new found friends then have to decide how long to stay and discover all that this beautiful area has to offer. The Victoria Falls is the world's largest curtain of falling water and one of Africa's great natural wonders. You can get close to the picturesque gorge on a number of hiking trails or Zambezi River boat trips and a stay or visit to the colonial style Victoria Falls hotel is a must.

BA's handling of firearms is a fiasco. An expensive fiasco. The protocol BA told you did not match what T3 security chose to do, and G4 [the outsource that manages firearms paperwork landside] stated that T3 security are out of step with T5 security AND head office. I paid an additional £315 to get my rifle onto BA059 and charging for the carriage of the ammunition case per a second firearm is a travesty. I am appalled at BA's lack of professionalism in central bookings, in T3 security and their T3 ticketing.

The flight from London to Cape Town via Doha is very long. I would not recommend this route to others, and I would not take it myself in the future

I think you should advise customers travelling on motorways in SA that there are tolls and GB credit cards are not accepted for payment. It caused us a major headache as we had to return to a services to get cash as we had used it all up.

Flights were all great - can really recommend Lufthansa! The only thing I would say is that we do not recommend Bidvest Car Hire - the vehicle they gave us had absolutely non existent shock absorbers - very dangerous.

Although your service cannot be faulted on our return flight no wheelchair assistance was booked from George to Cape Town and then no Halal meal was booked for my husband by BA from Cape Town to London. I don't believe DialAFlight is at fault but I think you should know how the airlines get it wrong.
