Amandari 5 Star

from £411 per room night

Just an hour’s drive from Denpasa airport, the Amandari (meaning ‘peaceful spirits’) is set in the village of Kedewatan, which is perched on an escarpment high above the lush Ayung River gorge in the mountainous north of Bali. With the peace and quiet of a remote hideaway, the resort is just 10 minutes from Bali’s cultural capital, Ubud.

Designed in the style of a Balinese village, the Amanari features pebbled walkways, and high stone walls, and the pathway that leads from the resort down to the river is said to be sacred land. Accommodation is a collection of 30 thatched-roof suites, each with its own courtyard garden and some with views of the Ayung River and the surrounding paddy fields. All the suites have WiFi. There are floor-to-ceiling doors on three sides of the villa, which slide open onto the lush surroundings. Décor is in traditional Balinese style with natural materials such as teak, coconut and stone. Suites are single storey with a king-sized bed, or duplex, with a four-poster bed on a mezzanine level. The duplex Asmara and Ayung suites have their own swimming pool, and the Amandari Suite has private pool, two separate bedrooms with a separate living pavilion, as well as a dining bale in teak and bamboo in the tropical garden. Pool suites have their own private plunge pools. Bathrooms are the ultimate

The pa offers a wide range of delightful beauty and wellbeing treatments, from facials, manicures and scrubs to massages in one of two open-air massage bales overlooking the tranquil lily pond. Make sure you try the traditional Balinese Mandi Lulur or cream bath. Private yoga classes are available, and there is a gym with cardiovascular machines, and a hard tennis court, which is floodlight at night. The library has a selection of books, newspapers, CDs, DVDs and games, and the boutique offers a range of Indonesian handicrafts from baskets, silk and pottery to silverware. If you want to go further afield, the hotel can arrange excursions to any part of Bali, with day trips to Gunung Kawi, the 11th century temple, as well as Lake Batur, Mount Agung, and Gekking, which is famous for its steep rice terraces. Like everything else here, dining is top-notch at the open-air restaurant overlooking the pool and the Ayung Valley. Western and Indonesian cuisine is served for breakfast, lunch and dinner, while the adjacent bar is the perfect place for pre and post-dinner drinks with the same splendid views.
