Everybody loves hanging out with cute animals! They make up a ridiculous proportion of popular internet content, but how much more satisfying to get up close to them and maybe even get to hold them.
There’s a whole wide world full of cuddly creatures yearning to be admired out there and there is no better place to find such adorable animals than down under. Grab yourself some flights to Australia and see for yourself how cute this little lot are!
The Wallaby
Kicking off our journey into the cuddly kingdom is the wallaby. Wallabies are pretty much like kangaroos only smaller, and we all know that smaller means cuter! A quick warning when swooping in for a hug with these guys – they may look adorable but their hind legs aren’t just used for running, wallabies will not hesitate to send you flying with a powerful kick if they feel threatened.
The Kookaburra
This bird is so sweet that the locals have even given it its own song which is also a popular nursery rhyme. Kookaburras are best known for their call which is said to sound exactly like human laughter!
The Emu
It’s debatable whether this fluffy creature would actually let you cuddle it, but you can’t deny there is something cute about that inquisitive little face! It is the largest bird native to Australia and is the second largest extant bird in the world, losing out to its close relative, the ostrich. Emus can run at an impressive speed of 50kph but those long legs stop them from being able to fly like other birds.
The Koala Bear
Now, we just couldn’t have a list of Australia’s cutest animals without putting the cuddly koala bear on it! It’s said that although they’re very friendly they hate being tickled or poked in the sides so stick to a straight forward hug when meeting these sweet little guys!
The Wombat
Next on our list is one of the koala bear’s closest relatives, the wombat. Unlike Koalas these guys stay on the ground digging themselves burrows, and act similarly to badgers. Recently people have started to have wombats as pets and will even walk them on a lead, so you might not to have search further than the local dog park if you want to get up close to these furry fellas!
The Dingo
The dingo is a wild dog that has refused to be domesticated, but even so they are super adorable, just probably not after a cuddle! It is suspected that dingoes have been roaming Australia for over 18,000 years and they have no plans to leave any time soon!
The Snake Necked Turtle
The snake necked turtle may actually be more curious looking that cute but we still think it deserves a place on this list! It’s often referred to as ‘the stinker’ because it omits an extremely offensive smell that reaches up to 3 meters away when it feels threatened!
The Tasmanian Devil
It’s all in the name with these guys – though they may look fury, small and cute they are, indeed, devilish! They are notoriously aggressive but also not overly intelligent. Our best advice is to look at these guys from a distance to be on the safe side!
The Bilby
Bilbies, often called dalgyte or pinkies are a sort of mixture between a rabbit and a bandicoot and look sweet as pie! Around Easter, children will often be given chocolate Easter bilbies instead of bunnies!
The Echidna
Last but not least on the list is the prickly but delightful looking echidna! Though they look cute and innocent they were actually named after a monster in ancient Greek mythology!
