A little winter sun never hurt anyone, so why not set sail for blue-sky days and sandy shores? Departing in November from New York, the city that never sleeps, to lovely San Juan, Puerto Rico, you can revel in the great ocean expanse. An overnight in the small yet vibrant city of Hamilton, Bermuda, punctuates three full days at sea. Then hop around four of the loveliest islands in the Caribbean on board Silversea's ship Silver Whisper, one of the most luxurious cruise liners afloat.
Your cruise adventure begins when you board the Silver Whisper in New York with plenty of time to see some of the sights in the Big Apple before setting sail. From Wall Street's skyscrapers to the neon of Times Square to Central Park's leafy paths, New York City pulses with an irrepressible energy. History meets hipness in this global centre of entertainment, fashion, media, and finance. World-class museums like MoMA and unforgettable icons like the Statue of Liberty beckon.
Day at Sea
The first of your three full days at sea and a good time to get to know all that the Silver Whisper has to offer. Days at sea are the perfect opportunity to relax, unwind and catch up with what you’ve been meaning to do. So whether that is going to the gym, visiting the spa, whale watching, reading a good book or simply topping up your tan, these blue sea days are the perfect balance to busy days spent exploring shore side.
With a permanent resident population of 1,500 households, Hamilton doesn't qualify as a major metropolis. Yet it has enough stores, restaurants, and offices to amp up the island’s energy level. Moreover, it has a thriving international business community which lends it a degree of sophistication seldom found in so small a centre. The central parishes cover the large area of Paget, Warwick, and Devonshire. These parishes are much sleepier than Hamilton and provide great nature and beaches.
Another full day to enjoy the delights of Hamilton and explore more of Bermuda. As with all ports of call on the cruise, there are a huge range of tours and activities to choose from while in port and they can all be booked aboard. Bermuda is known for its lovely pink sand beaches and coves where you can swim and snorkel and there are great museums, churches, parks and nature reserves. So much to see and do during your time on the island.
Day at Sea
Another full day at sea with time to appreciate all that the Silver Whisper has to offer. This luxurious ship, which has an intimate feel as it carries only 388 passengers, is the preferred choice of Silverseas world cruisers. It has a relaxing sophisticated and genuinely elegant atmosphere and a multi-million dollar refit has ensured that she is one of the most technically up to the minute cruise ships afloat.
Day at Sea
Before your Caribbean island adventures begin, spend your last full day at sea as the Silver Whisper heads for the island of Antigua. Food plays an important part of any cruise and there are four superb restaurants ranging elegant dining to quick snacks any time of the day. Now may be the perfect time to indulge yourself with a visit to the ship's Zagara spa for a beauty treatment or relaxing massage and tonight you can watch a show in the theatre or try your luck in the ship's casino.
St John's, Antigua
Antigua's capital lies at sea level at the inland end of a sheltered northwestern bay. There are a couple of notable historic sights and some good waterfront shopping areas and a lively market with old-time Caribbean shopping, a jambalaya of sights, sounds, and smells. There are 14 different excursions you can take while moored at St John's, but a visit to famous Nelson's Dockyard is a must and is included on most of the tours.
Although it's one of the smallest capitals, Roseau has the highest concentration of inhabitants of any town in the eastern Caribbean. Colourful architecture and a bustling marketplace transport visitors back in time. You can walk the entire town in about an hour seeing some of the restored buildings including the Lilac House. As with all destinations on the cruise, there are lots of tours to choose from, and while here you can head for the tropical interior and go for a swim in emerald waterfall pools.
You can easily explore all of Gustavia, where the Silver Whisper docks today, during a two-hour stroll. But there are six different tours of the island of Guadeloupe which can be booked on board. Some shops on the island close from noon to four, so plan lunch accordingly, but many stay open past seven in the evening. While ashore it's fun to take a walk past the luxurious catamarans, yachts, and sailboats in the harbour to see how the other half live..
Road Town, Tortola
There are 10 different tours available today when you arrive at Road Town, capital of the British Virgin Island of Tortola. The bustling town looks out over Road Harbour and it takes only an hour or so to stroll down Main Street and along the waterfront, checking out the traditional West Indian buildings painted in pastel colours. Or just choose a seat on one of the benches in Sir Olva Georges Square, on Waterfront Drive, and enjoy a spot of people watching.
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Your wonderful Caribbean cruise comes to an end today when the Silver Whisper arrives at San Juan, capital of Puerto Rico. Say farewell to all your new-found friends then before catching an onward flight, returning to New York for more sightseeing, or beginning your journey back home, it is well worth exploring the Old Town on a walking tour seeing all the colourful colonial buildings and learning all about its fascinating history..
