Journey Along California's Coast

Description

Think about the best road trips in America and a journey along Highway One, the Pacific coast route between Los Angeles and San Francisco, will probably be top of the list. On this seven day tour you begin in the City of Angels having time to see all the sights before heading up the coast to Santa Barbara then on the beautiful Carmel and Monterey before ending the trip in San Francisco.

Day 1
Los Angeles

On arrival at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) pick up your hire car and head for your hotel in the city. Los Angeles is the entertainment capital of the United States. Home to the movie stars and the famed landmark, the Hollywood sign, it is a city brimming with culture and happenings. This big metropolis has many regions with distinct flavours and communities. Relax after the journey then the rest of the day and evening is free for you to go out and explore.

Day 2
Los Angeles

Take some time to visit the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. Stroll along the Walk of Fame past the names of celebrities commemorated in pink stars along the sidewalk. Visit Mann’s Chinese Theatre, the best preserved of the movie palaces from Hollywood’s golden era, and known for its celebrity hand and footprints in the forecourt. Drive through Beverly Hills, the most famous neighbourhood in the U.S. and see exclusive homes. Shop at famous Rodeo Drive and visit Universal Studios and tour the sets. There's so much to see and do.

Day 3
Los Angeles to Santa Barbara

Leave Los Angeles behind this morning as you drive on the beautiful Pacific Coast Highway to Santa Barbara. This pristine city enjoys almost perfect year-round climate which enables visitors to enjoy a number of natural attractions. Stroll through the botanic gardens to see exotic flora or hike a scenic nature trail in Los Padres National Forest. All the beaches are different and you can take a whale watching trip at Arroyo Burro. Stop at the art museum or explore the Old Mission. Tonight visit Stearn’s Wharf and enjoy a sumptuous meal.

Day 4
Santa Barbara to Monterey

Leave Santa Barbara for the wonderful drive up the Pacific Coast to Monterey. Take the famously scenic 17-Mile drive at Carmel and stop at Pebble Beach and see the luxurious mansions along the coast. Discover nature’s treasures as you pass through majestic Del Monte Forest then spend the afternoon at Monterey, where the old sardine factories have been converted into quaint restaurants and boutiques. This area called Cannery Row was made famous by the author John Steinbeck and still remains a fun place to explore.

Day 5
Monterey to San Francisco

Today you drive to San Francisco, home of majestic Wine Country and the Golden Gate Bridge. Rows of elegant houses, the famous cable cars, clusters of ethnic neighbourhoods, and the colourful waterfront all add to the distinctive international flavour of the city. Today you are free to enjoy the sights and sounds of San Francisco. Take a cable car to Fisherman’s Wharf for shopping, take a boat trip to Alcatraz, and spend some time in Golden Gate Park. Also visit Chinatown and the very Italian flavoured North Beach.

Day 6
San Francisco

Another great day in San Francisco. Drive around the dramatic curves of Lombard Street, one of San Francisco’s most photographed sites and take a cable car from Hyde Street to Leavenworth Street and get spectacular views of Angel Island, Coit Tower, Yerba Buena Island and the Bay Bridge. You can also visit Muir Woods National Monument to see some of the tallest trees in the world. This evening, explore Chinatown, buy souvenirs and eat in one of the many fabulous restaurants.

Day 7
End of tour

Today your tour around and between two of America's great cities comes to an end. Possibly time for some last minute shopping or sightseeing before you drop off your car at the airport and catch an onward flight or begin your journey back home. Driving along the Pacific Coast Highway is a real delight and will leave you with so many great memories, which are enhanced by stays in Los Angeles and San Francisco with time to see most of the sights.

Always good service and helpful staff. Only problem directed to wrong terminal at LA. New Tom Bradley terminal now open for International arrivals and departures, not terminal 2.

Unfortunately my Mum's flight was cancelled while on the plane when it hit another plane. Virgin staff were very uninformative. They cancelled the flight put us up in a hotel but no communication from there. My mother does not do email and therefore had no idea what was happening. Her assists was not transferred to the new flight.
