Essential Treasures of the Incas

Description

Peru's Lares region, home to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, is one of the world's most beautiful and awe-inspiring places. This five-day tour takes you along ancient trails to remote villages and fascinating archaeological sites, culminating with a visit at sunrise to Machu Picchu, one of the seven wonders of the world. Along the way, you'll stay at luxurious mountain lodges, while your expert guides will give you insights into the local history and culture, as well as tailoring the itinerary with plenty of optional hikes and excursions.

Day 1
Sacred Valley Of The Incas

You'll set off from Cusco early this morning, and have a choice of browsing the market at Pisaq or taking a moderate hike in the hills and mountains above the Sacred Valley. Afterwards, you'll visit the isolated community of Viacha, to learn about the local farming practices and enjoy a traditional Pachamanca meal, cooked under hot stones. In the afternoon, you'll head for the archaeological complex at Pisaq, arriving after the crowds have departed, giving you a wonderful chance to explore in peace as the sun sets.

Day 2
Lares Region

This morning you'll set off by road into the mountainous heart of the Lares region, to explore its remote archaeological sites. After lunch, you have the choice of visiting a traditional weavers' village or taking a scenic drive followed by a moderate-to-strenuous hike past turquoise lakes and rugged peaks to the remote village of Huacahuasi, to meet local people and gain an insight into their lives and culture.

Day 3
Sacred Valley Of The Incas

This morning you'll learn more about the Huacahuasi community. Afterwards, you have a choice of hikes: a spectacular route over a high pass to the adjacent valley, leading to Ollantaytambo, the oldest living city in Latin America, or an easier route along the authentic Inca trail from Lares Pass to the local community of Totora. Alternatively, you could visit an ethnographic museum to learn more about Peru's history, or explore the valley by mountain bike. You'll have lunch in the Urubamba River countryside en route to Ollantaytambo, where you can enjoy a stroll through the charming maze-like streets.

Day 4
Sacred Valley Of The Incas

Early this morning you'll make the short hike to the Inca storage structures high above Ollantaytambo, to take in the breathtaking views of the town and the temple. Afterwards, you'll enjoy a guided tour of the fortress, a magnificent example of Inca architecture, before taking a scenic train ride along the Urubamba River Valley to the bustling town of Aguas Calientes, below the Machu Picchu Sanctuary.

Day 5
Machu Picchu

You'll rise early this morning for the bus journey to Machu Picchu, entering the Sanctuary just as the sun rises over the iconic Sun Gate – a truly unforgettable sight. You'll have plenty of time to take in the many watchtowers, the Temple of the Sun, and the royal Inca residences, as well as to sit quietly and soak up the peaceful atmosphere of this awe-inspiring setting. Afterwards, you can join an optional uphill hike, before lunch in Aguas Calientes. This afternoon you'll return to Cusco by train and private coach.

I had a surprise on my return flight when a gentleman asked to change places with me so that he could sit with his wife. His travel agent had messed things up and put him in Business Class with his wife in Economy! Nice swap!

Travelling for 4 weeks in South America with 2 small boys under 8... What could possibly go wrong? When you book with DialAFlight the answer is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! We're just back from another amazing trip organised by the DialAFlight team which ran like clockwork thanks to the efforts of Pete Smith & the team. Looking forward to booking our next trip with DialAFlight.

I liked the check-up call before our flights and how personal the service was.

If visiting Lima then I would advise any passengers to stay in Miraflores or another town outside of the city. Traffic was horrific. A thirty minute transfer to hotel took nearly three hours. It was also very threatening and unsafe in the city centre, along with friends being 'mugged' in their taxi from the airport! . Our stay in Costa Rica was incredible. Thanks again Dennis. Great job!

This is the second time I have used DialAFlight - they are exemplary! First time I flew to Australia and had a huge delay (airline's fault) and was virtually abandoned by the airline with 12 hour delay in Dubai after a 5 hour delay in Adelaide. No sleep, no hotel available at the airport. In desperation I called DialAFlight who sorted me out a hotel and advised me - I was NOT alone. This time my trip was perfect but was made all the better by Brodie whose care and interest were exceptional - it could not have been any better - he found cheap upgrades on the way over, sorted out dietary requirements, a great hotel at half the cost of my fellow travellers. I don't know how they do it. DialAFlight- you OWN customer service!

Only complaint was the BA crew being late as their hotel was so far away. Peru traffic a nightmare and this will be a regular thing. DialAFlight spot on
