Jewels of Turkey and Greece

Description

Explore the historical and natural highlights of this spectacular region on this 11-day tour

Day 1
Istanbul

Today you'll arrive in Istanbul, to be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Once you've settled in, you have the option of a half-day sightseeing tour, or you can start exploring under your own steam. You'll enjoy dinner tonight in your hotel.

Day 2
Istanbul / Izmir / Kusadasi/ Patmos

After breakfast this morning you'll be driven to Ataturk Airport to catch your flight to Izmir, from where you'll transfer to Kusadasi for your three-night cruise around the Aegean Islands. Your first stop will be Patmos, site of the apocalyptic revelations of St John the Divine, written here during his exile from the Roman Empire. You'll visit the cave where he lived, now part of the Monastery of the Apocalypse, and the fortified Monastery of St John, filled with priceless icons and manuscripts. Afterwards, you'll head back on board for dinner.

Day 3

This morning you'll arrive at Heraklion on the Greek Island of Crete, where you'll visit the ruins of the Palace of Knossos, thought to be the mythical labyrinth of King Minos and the seat of the ancient Minoan culture. After leaving Heraklion, your next stop is the beautiful island of Santorini, with its breathtaking views, whitewashed houses, narrow streets, open-air cafes and glittering boutiques. Dinner and overnight on board.

Day 4
Santorini / Athens / Mykonos

Today you arrive at Piraeus, the port city of Athens. The Greek capital was the cradle of democracy, birthplace of Western civilization and today is a vibrant city where the old and new co-exist perfectly. Visit the majestic Parthenon which rises above the city, its ancient glory still visible in the time-worn stone. Then it's on to the last island of the cruise, Mykonos, where you will see hundreds of tiny chapels and beautiful windmills. Find a table on the waterfront and bask in the serenity of sunset over the pretty harbour. Dinner and overnight on board.

Day 5
Mykonos / Kusadasi /Pamukkale

You'll arrive back at the port town of Kusadasi early this morning, giving you plenty of time to visit the vast nearby ruins of the ancient city of Ephesus. Explore this old Roman city and see the Library of Celcius, the Temple of Hadrian, the Theatre and the Odeon. After lunch, travel on to Pamukkale, known as the "Cotton Castle", with its snow-white terraces formed by thermal waters cascading down the hillside. Visit the ruins of Hierapolis with its famous Necropolis, the Basilica Theatre and Plutonium. Dinner and overnight at your hotel in Pamukkale.

Day 6
Pamukkale / Konya / Cappadocia

After an early breakfast, you'll set off for Cappadocia, visiting the Sultanhan Caravansarai on the way. After lunch in Konya you'll visit the Mausoleum, Museum and Monastery Complex dedicated to Mevlana Celalettin Rumi, the founder of the mystical order of Whirling Dervishes. You can enjoy the panoramic views as you travel on Cappadocia, where you'll check into your hotel and have dinner.

Day 9
Ankara / Istanbul

This morning you'll transfer to Istanbul by bus and enjoy a half-day sightseeing tour, including a visit to the Sultanahmet Mosque, known popularly as the Blue Mosque, famous for its blue tiles and six minarets. Finally, you'll visit the vast Grand Bazaar, the biggest souk in the world, with nearly 4,000 shops selling antiques, jewellery and carpets.

Claire was amazing - putting up with me and my many requests. I really wanted to go to Santorini but really I'd left it so late it looked as though I was going to have to give up. Claire persisted and found me a hotel in the right resort at the right price and it was one I hadn't even looked at but it was brilliant. One of my best holidays ever.

For my recent trip to Santorini, with hindsight I wouldn't have taken the room upgrade to a junior suite. It meant we had a jacuzzi that was indoors in the corner of the room with no view!

I have always considered the service you provide and your attention to detail to be quite remarkable. On this occasion you managed to exceed even my expectations when an issue concerning baggage charges arose at the last minute. Your excellent customer services team quickly resolved the problem and enabled us to continue with our arrangements at no extra cost. Please convey our sincere appreciation to all concerned at DialAFlight. By the way, the Santorini caldera is amazing but you probably know that already!
