Finland's Arctic resort of Kakslauttanen is a picture-perfect winter wonderland of snowy forests, log cabins, roaring open fires, reindeer and huskies. You'll even spend one night of your trip in a heated glass "igloo", giving you a stunning view of the stars – and hopefully the Northern Lights – from your cosy bed.
Today you'll fly to Ivalo via Helsinki, check in to your private log cabin and enjoy a hearty dinner at the resort restaurant.
This morning you'll have the chance to learn about life as a Sami reindeer herder before setting off on a leisurely four-hour reindeer safari. You'll travel in your own sled, snuggled up with plenty of warm blankets, enjoying the Arctic forest scenery. Lunch will be a picnic in a wilderness cabin, before you return to Kakslauttanen where this evening you'll enjoy dinner at the hotel restaurant. Be sure to look out for the Northern Lights as you return to your cabin.
Northern Lights by Snowmobile
You have most of today at leisure, and might choose to try tobogganing, snow shoeing or cross-country skiing. In the early evening, you'll be taught the basics of snowmobiling before heading out to a spot on the fells that's known locally as a great place to watch the Northern Lights. With a bit of luck you'll be able to enjoy this magnificent sight before returning to Kakslauttanen for dinner.
Husky Safari and a Night under the Stars
After breakfast today you will enjoy a thrilling four-hour husky safari, taking it in turns to mush a six-husky pack across the Urho Kekkonen Park. You'll enjoy lunch around an camp fire before returning to Kakslauttanen and heading to the "igloo" where you'll spend tonight. The igloo are constructed from thermal glass and heated to 21°C, so you can relax in comfort and watch the star-studded night sky and, hopefully, the Aurora Borealis.
This morning you'll enjoy breakfast and the chance to relax in a sauna before transferring to the airport for your flight home.
