Mexico Real Food Adventure

Description

These days there are good Mexican restaurants to be found all over the world but there is nothing quite like sampling the country's marvellous cuisine in the place where it originated. Beginning and ending in the vast capital Mexico City, you travel to Puebla, Oaxaca and Zipolite sampling lots of great food along the way. If you have the appetite for a holiday with a difference, you can make a meal of this great tour.

Day 1
Mexico City

This fun tour makes a great add on to a longer visit to Mexico and starts in the capital city. Leave your hotel or come straight from the airport and dive into Mexico City’s celebrated food scene on a taco crawl. Eat delectable tacos al pastor (slow-roasted, marinated pork tacos) and sip mezcal, the locals favourite drink, in one of the city’s sensational bars. This is a great way to begin, but don't indulge too much as there are lots of culinary highlights to come.

Day 2
Mexico City

Today you can enjoy a walking tour of Mexico City's Centro Historico and marvel at the impressive Zocalo, Latin's America's largest city square. Along the way, visit Mercado San Juan, the city’s main food market, before roaming the surrounding streets, watching local vendors at work. Then pull up a chair at one of the best seafood stands in the city for a late lunch.

Day 3
Puebla

Start the day with a delicious breakfast before catching a colourful local bus to Puebla, Mexico’s culinary capital. The city is renowned for dishes which combine Spanish and pre-hispanic influences, such as chiles en nogada (stuffed chillies covered in creamy walnut sauce). Then venture out on a culinary city tour – start with some Pueblan street food before making a beeline for Calle de los Dulces - Sweet Street - to sample tortitas de Santa Clara (shortbread biscuits) and camotes (sweet potato lollies). Check out the much-loved and very colourful Lucha Libre wrestling this evening.

Day 4
Oaxaca

Enjoy a cooking class in Puebla, where you’ll learn the secrets behind some of the dishes you’ve been tasting while here. Then travel to Oaxaca, a beautiful colonial city nicknamed the ‘land of the seven moles’. Visit the fabulous Abastos Market and enjoy some delicious regional specialities including grasshoppers, cactus fruit and Oaxacan cheese. Chocoholics won’t want to miss a trip down to the shops on Calle Mina for a taste of real Oaxaca chocolate – it’s no wonder it’s seen as the food of the gods! Then savour the smoky taste of mezcal, an alcohol similar to tequila, on a visit to a local distillery.

Day 5
Oaxaca

Your breakfast this morning is at a unique local restaurant, dedicated to preserving the many varieties of corn grown throughout Oaxaca state. Then visit some of Oaxaca's renowned markets to taste distinct regional specialties – from cactus fruit and grasshoppers to the heavenly queso Oaxaca (Oaxacan cheese). The rest of the day and evening is free for you to explore on your own seeing the sights and sampling more local dishes.

Day 6
Oaxaca

Today you visit one of the oldest markets in Mesoamerica and witness ancient Zapotec cultural traditions as the community gathers together from neighbouring villages at the local market. Enjoy a delicious barbecue breakfast, sip mezcal at a family-run distillery, then explore the impressive ancient ruins of Mitla before jumping on an overnight bus bound for the Pacific coast.

Day 7
Zipolite

You arrive in Zipolite in the early morning. Considered one of the most beautiful stretches of beach on Mexico's south-west coast, this is the perfect place to relax and unwind away from the tourist bustle of some of the larger beachside towns. Pull up a chair at one of the water-front restaurants, or laze in a hammock by the sea. Fish dishes are a speciality here and there are lots of restaurants.

Day 8
Zipolite

Plenty of options today unless you just want to chill out and relax on the beach enjoying the tropical sun. You can head out on a fishing expedition then learn how to make ceviche (raw fish cooked in citrus juice) in the true Mexican style. Then it’s time for one final dinner to celebrate this divine Mexican food adventure and there are plenty of options to choose from.

Day 9
Mexico City

This morning after breakfast there may be more time for relaxing on the beach or shopping for souvenirs before you travel to the local airport to catch a flight back to Mexico City where this special culinary adventure comes to an end. Once back in the capital city you can stay on and extend your holiday, catch an onward flight or begin your journey home taking with you lots of new culinary ideas.

Thank you for your suggestion to fly from Manchester with BA and transfer at Heathrow on the BA flight to Mexico City. Went up to the refuge on Pic Orizaba, which is at the same height as the top of the Matterhorn and walked up the morraines to a height higher than Mont Blanc. Not bad for 73 and 68 year olds!

Although Aeromexico were good value, the food and drink service on the way back were of a poor standard. Otherwise all was good especially the pre-holiday service from Kennedy which was much appreciated.

First of all I'd like to kick myself for not ever booking with DialAFlight before! Most importantly I would really like to thank Dominic for his recommendations for my trip to Cancun. I am a keen traveller and I have to say this was one of my best holidays ever, so thank you very much Dominic! The hotel, its location, even the flights, I couldn't have asked for better. Thank you for your help and patience while I did some research on my side. I will most definitely be on my travels again soon and theres no doubt I will be booking my holidays with Dominic. Keep doing what you do best.
