Sydney to Melbourne Coastal Drive

Description

Australia is a vast country and if you want to drive yourself around seeing the sights you have to choose your route carefully. This seven day coastal drive between the country's two greatest cities is one of the best. After leaving Sydney you hug the Pacific Ocean passing through picturesque towns and villages and past beautiful beaches, lakes and national parks on the way to Melbourne. This relatively short trip makes a great add on to any longer visit Down Under

Day 1
Sydney to Jervis Bay

Leaving Sydney you drive south for 150 miles along the coast to beautiful Jervis Bay. Your journey today takes you through the Royal National Park and onto the Grand Pacific Drive with spectacular coastal scenery. Travel across the impressive Sea Cliff Bridge and through rainforests and quaint coastal villages to reach Wollongong. Here take the turn-off for Huskisson and Jervis Bay. Nearby Hyams Beach has the whitest sand in the world and Jervis Bay is well known for its resident dolphin population and a cruise to see them is a must.

Day 2
Jervis Bay to Batemans Bay

A shorter drive today when you leave Jervis Bay and continue your journey south for around 100 miles to Batemans Bay. For the majority of the drive you’ll have national park views to your West, and stunning coast to your East. When you arrive at 'The Bay', as it is affectionately known, you will soon discover that this is a great place for going trekking or taking undemanding walks in the Clyde Valley with its spectacular surrounding mountainous national parks.

Day 3
Batemans Bay to Gipsy Point

Following the Princes Highway south, today you’ll drive through many towns and beautiful forests on your way to the state border of New South Wales and Victoria. Pass through Tilba Tilba and drive along the amazing Sapphire Coast to the city of Merimbula where lagoons, lakes and ocean are separated by white sand, and fringed by unspoilt bushland stretching up into the mountains. You then continue through the middle of the Yambulla State Forest before crossing the border into Victoria and turning at Genoa to beautiful Gipsy Point.

Day 4
Gipsy Point to Lakes Entrance

Leave Gipsy Point this morning and travel south via Cann River along the Princes Highway. Near Cabbage Tree Creek leave the highway and visit the Cape Conran Coastal Park and the village of Marlo. Rejoin the highway at Orbost, situated on the banks of the Snowy River. From here it's a short drive onto Lakes Entrance, a unique area with rivers, lakes and lagoons joining 90 Mile Beach. Take a cruise or a sail around Australia’s largest inland waterway and explore the nearby village of Metung also located on the beautiful lakes.

Day 5
Lakes Entrance to Wilsons Promontory

Today you have around 225 miles to drive. Leaving Lakes Entrance continue along the Princes Highway through the stunning Victorian bushland. South east of Sale is the Holey Plains State Park where you can see a variety of Australia’s native flora and fauna before arriving into the Gippsland region. Continue south via Yarram and Foster to reach the extraordinary Wilsons Promontory in the south east. Here you find masses of green forests and gardens, stunning mountains, rocky rivers, pretty towns and long sandy beaches.

Day 6
Wilsons Promontory to Philip Island

On the 100 mile drive to Phillip Island you have stunning views of Victoria’s southern coast. The route is dotted with many small towns that have that quaint country feel to them. You’ll come to gorgeous Bunurong Marine and Coastal Park at Cape Paterson where you can discover the fascinating marine environment along some of Victoria's most beautiful coastline before arriving at Phillip Island, home to Australia's Little Penguins. The famous `Penguin Parade' occurs each evening at sunset and should not be missed.

Day 7
Philip Island to Melbourne

Say goodbye to the penguins this morning and leave Phillip Island for the two hour drive into the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Spend the rest of the day seeing the sights in this great city renown for its sporting connections, art scene and great restaurants . . . you will be spoiled for choice. Your car is booked until tomorrow and should be dropped off at the city or airport by the same time as it was picked up on the first day to avoid any additional charges.

Everything went well except the flight from Dubai to Sydney on Qantas which was an old plane and the entertainment had broken, so the flight was long and boring with no films, otherwise it was good. Many thanks to the team who helped us

Please inform all passengers to Australia and new Zealand that if taking cigarettes or tobacco the amounts allowed are minimal. Australia allows 25 cigarettes only and New Zealand is little better.

Where flights cross timezones as mine did it would help for the system to include length of flight in the itinerary. Thank you for your work on this, particularly to Billy who worked with many changes in the planning.
