Overview
Remember the stiff upper lips of Michael Caine and Stanley Baker as they faced hordes of spear weilding warriors in the classic film Zulu? On this exciting battlefields and safari self drive tour you could be standing on the same spot as our heroes at Rorke's Drift . . . but this time the locals will be very friendly and welcoming. Starting in the South African ocean side city of Durban, you will drive to the beautiful and majestic Zululand hills to visit all the great battle sites to hear first hand the stories of courage and carnage. All this, and the chance to enjoy a safari and visit a spectacular world heritage site make this a great trip for anyone with a sense of history and adventure.
Day 1
Durban to Drakensberg
On arrival in Durban you make your way to the Hertz depot where you will collect your hire car. Spend some time exploring this interesting and diverse ocean side city before beginning your drive to the spectacular World Heritage Site of Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park where you will stay for your first night.

Day 2
Drakensberg
A chance to relax today and enjoy an extensive range of leisure activities from guided hikes to beach volleyball. The tabletop peaks of the Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg range, which form the boundary between South Africa and the mountain kingdom of Lesotho, offer some of the country’s most awe-inspiring landscapes. This vast sweep of basalt summits and buttresses are so recognisably South African and never cease to amaze.

Day 3
Drakensberg to Battlefields
Today you will drive to the majestic beauty of the Zululand hills where you will be able to re-live the history of the Anglo-Zulu and the Anglo-Boer wars as well as experience the vibrant culture of the Zulu people. Visit Isandlwana where so many British soldiers were massacred and iconic Rorke's Drift, the setting for the 1964 film Zulu.

Day 4
Battlefields
Another day to spend exploring the battlefields, learning about the stories of carnage and courage and driving around this magnificent area. On 22 January 1879, at Rorke's Drift on the Natal border with Zululand, a tiny British garrison of 140 men - many of them sick and wounded - fought for 12 hours to repel repeated attacks by up to 3,000 Zulu warriors. This heroic defence was rewarded by Queen Victoria's government with no fewer than 11 Victoria Crosses. Overnight tonight back at the Isandlwana Lodge

Day 5
Battlefields to Hluhluwe Safari Park
Today you leave the battlefields behind and drive to the shore of Lake St Lucia for some exciting game drives in Hluhluwe Safari Park, which is the largest and oldest game park in Kwazulu Natal. It is also the home of all the big five - lion, buffalo, leopard, elephant and rhino - so you will have a good chance of seeing all of these great beasts during your game drives.

Day 6
Hluhluwe Safari Park
Spend today on self guided walking trails, birdwatching or just relax and laze day by the swimming pool. Visitors are in awe of the beauty and incredibly scenic and diverse vegetation of this area, with its rolling hills, and many vantage points where you can get great views of the thorny bushland and the grassy plains. Hluhluwe Game Reserve is world-renowned for bringing back the endangered species of black and white rhino from extinction. The endangered wild dog can also be found here.

After breakfast today at the safari lodge it's time to drive back to Durban and return your hire car.
