Overview
This vintage South African round trip which begins and ends in Cape Town takes you along the beautiful Garden Route and to the area's famous vineyards. Throughout the journey you will stay at top notch hotels and lodges and visit the best wineries where you can sample the world-class wines. As you drive from Cape Town and back you will see spectacular scenery and visit fascinating towns like Oudtshoorn, Knysna, Swellendam and Hermanus, which is probably the best land based spot for whale watching. This great 11 day self drive tour will ensure you get the very best out of this stunning part of the Rainbow Nation.
Day 1
Arrive Cape Town
After your overnight flight to Cape Town you collect your hire car and drive the short distance into the city centre. As there is no jet-lag to content with you can easily spend the afternoon exploring this 'Mother City'. A good place to start is with a stroll around the smart Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, where there are great shops and restaurants.

Day 2
Cape Town
A full day of exploration in Cape Town today. You can take the hop on hop off sightseeing buses for a better understanding of the city and what is has to offer. Weather permitting a trip on the cable car to the top of Table Mountain is a must for spectacular views over the city or a short boat trip to Robben Island, famous for being where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for so many years. Overnight Cape Town .

Day 3
Cape Town
Today you could take the car and drive through wonderful coast roads south along the peninsula experiencing the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other. Visit the rugged Cape of Good Hope and marvel at the point where these two oceans meet. Visit the penguin colony at Boulders Beach before returning to the city via Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, which are famous the world over for their rich diversity of flora and fauna.

Day 4
Cape Town to Winelands
Today after breakfast you begin a leisurely drive north east to the world famous winelands. Many of the wineries produce a wealth of top class wines that can be sampled along the way. You will stop and visit some of the properties situated in Stellenbosch, which is home to many fine wineries as well as gourmet restaurants.

Day 5
Winelands to Oudtshoorn
Depart today for the fascinating drive along Route 62, South Africa's equivalent of America's famous Route 66. Along the way you will have a chance to explore some lovely little towns as you meander through ever changing landscapes on the way to your next stop Oudtshoorn. The capital of the feather industry, Oudtshoorn is the epicentre of ostrich farming and a visit to one of the farms along the way is highly recommended.

Day 6
Oudtshoorn to Knysna
A morning of exploration in and around this fascinating town. Perhaps a visit to the Cango Caves which boast some of the biggest Stalagmites in the world. These huge caverns have attracted visitors for hundreds of years and are easily accessed and professionally guided. Then set off across one of the most spectacular mountain passes in the world as the road winds its way with breathtaking views at every turn. As you start to descend the other side you will notice how the vegetation changes dramatically as you head towards Knysna.

Day 7
Knysna
A chance today to explore Knysna's bustling waterfront with its array of colourful shops and fine dining places. You can sit and enjoy a glass of sparkling wine while eating fresh water oysters from the lagoon before taking a boat trip on the lagoon to enjoy the sights and witness the beautiful sunsets. You may also have time for a trip on the town's famous train.

Day 8
Knysna to Swellendam
Another morning to take part in some of the many exciting activities that Knysna and its surrounds have to offer before your leisurely drive south back towards Cape Town. Your overnight stop tonight is in the quaint town of Swellendam. Sometimes overlooked by the more well known towns of Mossel Bay and Hermanus this town is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the Overberg area without the crowds.

Day 9
Swellendam to Hermanus
After a leisurely breakfast this morning you can take time to explore this lovely area. Perhaps take a detour off the main road to Cape Agulhas the true Southern tip of Africa. This area is completely off the beaten track and you enjoy the slower pace of life as you meander through pretty villages. On to Hermanus and probably the best land based whale watching in the world.

Day 10
Hermanus to Winelands
Today you can take a stroll along the cliffs looking for whales in the bay. Alternatively look out for the Whale Crier who wanders the town announcing the daily sightings. Later sample some of the many seafood delicacies on offer before your short picturesque coast drive towards your final destination, Spier Wine Estate, for an evening of good wine, food and time to reflect on the many wonders you have seen.

Day 11
Depart Cape Town
A final morning to explore the Spier Wine estate and all it has to offer. Shop for those must have souvenirs then make time to visit the cheetah outreach programme on site where you can have the opportunity to learn more about the valuable work they do in conservation and get up close with these magnificent creatures for a stroke. Then make the short drive to the airport to drop off your car and catch your onward flight or begin your journey home.
