Travel Review Sites: Watch out for the smoke and mirrors.

Don't always trust what you read on travel review sites as there's often more smoke than mirrors. That's the message this week from travel watchdogs.

One of the clever weasels used by many travel companies is to ask for reviews after a customer has booked - but importantly before they travel, unlike DialAFlight which asks customers after they have travelled. Who isn't happy just after they have booked, you may ask?

Even more misleading, says consumer watchdog Which? are fake reviews on TripAdvisor which is used by many would-be holidaymakers to choose resorts, hotels and excursions. It has found 'hugely suspicious' patterns of comments from contributors and 'blatant hallmarks' of fake reviews.

It said that in the case of one hotel in Jordan, TripAdvisor subsequently removed 730 of its five-star reviews. Naomi Leach of Which? Travel accused TripAdvisor of a failure to stop fake reviews and take strong action against hotels that 'abuse the system.'

TripAdvisor later hit back at the allegations that it is failing to stop a flood of fake reviews by claiming they had fraud detection tools that were far more sophisticated than those used by Which?

Yesterday the BBC published a story about a derelict pub which had been shut since 2011 but was being reviewed on TripAdvisor for three years from 2014 by people claiming to have had Sunday roasts and experiencing poor service.

10 things you didn't know last month

  1. 1. Plane truth about dirty headrests

A new survey has given the heads up on what is the dirtiest and most contaminated area on a plane... and it's the seat headrest. A company called Marketplace took 19 short-haul flights between Ottawa and Montreal at various times of the day this summer and during each flight, they swabbed five spots - the seatbelt, tray table, headrest, seat pocket and washroom handle. More than 100 samples were then sent off to a university lab to be tested for various bacteria, as well as yeast, mould, and E.coli. Almost half the surfaces that were tested had high levels of bacteria, yeast or mould that would put a person at risk of serious infection. But the headrest, particularly the one nearest to the window, was the worst.
  2. 2. Checking out the Final Frontier

Qantas is closer to the 'final frontier' of aviation with plans to fly the 10,500 miles between London and Sydney non-stop. Passengers and pilots on the 19 hour test flights between London and New York and Australia's East Coast will have checks to see how they would cope with the world's longest commercial flights. The Australian flag carrier launched a 17 hour service between London and Perth on the West Coast last year. But it said test flights to Sydney will take place as part of what it calls "Project Sunrise". Three Boeing 787-9s flights will take off from next month with 40 passengers and crew and all aspects of their health will be checked out by scientists.
  3. 3. Kiss and fly parking fees take off

Four out of five UK airports have increased charges for drivers dropping off or collecting passengers this summer, a study found. Eighteen of the 22 airports analysed have introduced or raised drop-off or pick-up fees, the RAC investigation found. Kiss and fly charges - typically levied for dropping off someone close to the terminal - have increased at eight airports compared with last year. Stansted and Luton have the most expensive charges at £4 for 10 minutes and 13 minutes respectively. Manchester charges the most per minute while East Midlands, Birmingham, Doncaster-Sheffield and Newcastle all added £1 to their minimum drop off charges. Six airports continue to allow free drop-offs including Heathrow and Gatwick.
  4. 4. Bali backlash over bad behaviour

Badly behaved visitors to Bali will be sent home or face "purification rituals" for disrespecting sacred sites, officials say. The warning came after a Czech couple filmed themselves splashing each other with holy water at a temple on the Indonesian holiday island. It was the latest in a string of tourist gaffes on the Hindu-dominated island, which has seen an Australian kicking a man off a motorbike and a Russian visitor trying to smuggle out a drugged baby orangutan from a temple in the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary.
  5. 5. Ryanair... greedy, sneaky and arrogant!

Ryanair has been rated the worst firm for customer service out of 100 British brands after passengers were left dismayed by its handling of complaints. The damning verdict comes in a Which? survey that asked nearly 4,000 of its members to rate how companies make them feel, how helpful and knowledgeable their staff were and how well they handled complaints. Ryanair came last - managing a paltry customer service score of only 45 per cent, with one star in all three categories. When asked about how well the airline handles complaints, half gave it the lowest rating possible. Given a choice of 50 words to describe Ryanair most passengers opted for 'greedy', 'sneaky' and 'arrogant'.
  6. 6. Now BA ditches SeaWorld

British Airways Holidays is the latest tour operator to stop selling tickets to SeaWorld, as part of a new animal welfare policy. The package arm of the airline announced that it would no longer offer venues where captive animals were "central to the attraction". The news follows a similar move by Virgin Holidays last month and Thomas Cook last year. The Florida-based theme park chain says it is disappointed that BA has "succumbed to pressure from animal activists."
  7. 7. Venice has a new bridge of Sighs

The architect behind one of Venice's most modern bridges has been fined £71,150 after the structure was alleged to be incapable of handling the city's thousands of tourists on a daily basis. Constitution Bridge across the Grand Canal has been beset with problems since its opening in 2008. leading a Venice court to accuse Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava of gross negligence. The court said the steps on the bridge wore out too quickly but Calatrava denies the charge and says that the bridge, made out of glass and steel, is of sound design.
  8. 8. Beach rental rip offs

The exorbitant cost of a day at some of the world's most popular beaches has been revealed. Parasols and sun loungers were one of the most extortionate beach costs, with a day's rent at Waikiki beach in Honolulu, Hawaii, priced at £41. South Beach, Florida, was second most expensive - offering parasols and sun loungers separately, but they came at a combined price of $35. Bournemouth was the only UK beach among the top 10 most expensive - its combined charge was £13 a day, which works out at £1.60p an hour.
  9. 9. Warning over 'mystery' holidays

The rise of "mystery travel deals", where holidaymakers book without knowing the destination, risks leaving consumers out of pocket, Atol warns. The financial protection scheme has advised those keen on a surprise trip to check which company is providing the travel - and whether the trip is Atol protected. Andy Cohen, head of Atol, said: "Exciting mystery travel deals could leave you financially vulnerable should an operator go bust and is not Atol protected."
  10. 10. Florida to tackle seaweed menace

Florida is facing up to the prospect of having to clear up masses of rotting seaweed from its beaches at a cost of millions of dollars a year. The sargassum is a growing problem in the Caribbean, where it is painting strips of sand murky brown, while emitting an aroma of rotten eggs. A warmer ocean and fertiliser run-off from farming along the Amazon are said to be to blame. Dan Gelber, mayor of Miami Beach, which has been swamped by the seaweed, said: "It's important for our residents and for visitors that we take care of it, and we are going to.. As much as £37 million a year has been ring-fenced to deal with the problem.

    My Favourite Holiday

Gabby was whisked away to glamorous destinations...

TV presenter Gabby Logan loves sporty trips and recalls backpacking nightmares

What are your earliest holiday memories? My dad was a footballer which meant I got pulled out of school early every summer and whisked away to glamorous destinations on tour with him. He wasn't earning the kind of money that footballers get today, but still his job enabled us to visit the Caribbean, the Greek Islands and America, which all seemed incredibly exotic back then. Neither of my parents had the privilege of holidays growing up, and they wanted us to experience life to the full.

What sort of holidays do you like? My family don't flop out when we holiday together. We're all sporty and usually keep busy with games, tennis and water sports. Our 'safe space' is the Finca Cortesin hotel in Spain. If I were to spring a surprise long weekend on everyone (husband Kenny and twins Lois and Reuben) they'd all know exactly where to expect - gorgeous restaurants and a beautiful pool, for starters.

How do you find work travel? It is not glamorous at all. Sometimes I can get off a plane and have to do a press conference straight away. As the only woman on most work trips, some days can be very testing. While covering the Euro 2012 matches in Donetsk, my hotel room had no windows. It was also the only bedroom-slash-bathroom I had ever seen. I wanted to cry but instead I set to work and somehow I emerged later, camera-ready. We work to such tight schedules that I often find myself getting changed in airport toilet cubicles.

Did you have a Gap Year? Not really, as my gap year was filled with work and not nearly as much travel as I would have liked. My sister and I did go to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics for a week but the strictly religious landlady at our first lodgings kicked us out after my sister invited her then boyfriend over to stay. We were homeless, without a penny to spare, but the travel angels must have been looking down on us because the boyfriend in question (the British captain of the men's gymnastic team) found us a luxury apartment in the city free of charge.

What was your worst holiday experience? It was while travelling around Peru in the early nineties. My friend and I were on a 12 hour train from Machu Picchu to Lake Titicaca when I came down with the most terrible sickness. When we got off the train I fell down a manhole and the cherry on the cake was when I flushed the loo in our hostel it spewed raw sewage all over the bathroom floor. The next day we flew to Las Vegas and arrived with massive rucksacks smelling of Peru, but had a great time. Everyone should have a terrible backpacking story from their 20s and I hope my children will have theirs too.

How and what do you pack when going away? I lay out every outfit I'm going to wear on the bed then pack them by category in neat little cubes. Some days I'm dashing from one studio to the next and passing through myriad micro-climates so my Columbia lightweight jacket regulates my body temperature and squishes down nicely when packing.

    • Perfect honeymoon with service to match

From start to finish Jackson and colleagues at DialAFlight were amazing. It was so easy to book and saved me hours of planning which was definitely helpful while planning a wedding too! Recommendations for hotels and excursions were all spot on and our honeymoon was an absolute dream trip. They even managed to help us with the 8 hour time difference (which meant out of hours in the UK) when another company messed up a booking for a tour. Can't recommend DialAFlight more highly.

Anna Riddick gave DialAFlight 5 stars on Trustpilot. Sparkling footnote: Anna's name was pulled out of the hat in our monthly Trustpilot draw and a case of Prosecco is on its way.
    • DialAFlight to the rescue

Great service, always a good deal, and this time when stuck with Hurricane Dorian, used the emergency helpline they have, fantastic, and within 10mins they had my flights swapped and got us home early to avoid the storm. Well done to Emma and Rupert, will definitely use DialAFlight again.

    • Simply the best

Excellent service from the very start of my enquiry at short notice as always. From a personal point of view, I can't stress enough how pleased I am with the service offered by DialAFlight staff. I have used DialAFlight for many years and to me, they are the best. They listen to what you want from a holiday and try to match up your requirements accordingly, price and convenience of travel times, plus additional things such as airline preferences.

    • Excellent service during our trip to Japan

This summer, my friend and I chose to embark on a three week trip to Japan. Due to struggling to manoeuvre through a multitude of Japanese websites, and finding it difficult to find affordable flights and accommodation, we got in contact with DialAFlight. We found Hugo specifically to be very amicable, knowledgeable, and flexible. Through him, we were able to organise our trip at a casual step by step pace. His travel expertise was exquisite and he was able, through dial a flight contacts, to help us arrange: our flights, and five separate accommodations for a three-week trip, all at an affordable rate for us.

Nathan gave DialAFlight 5 stars on Trustpilot.
