It's Airbnb with no airs, but plenty of graces

Airbnb is usually in the news for the wrong reasons. For every satisfied customer there seems to be one who has been ripped off or bitterly disappointed.

But we had a chuckle at a couple of Airbnb's latest close-to-home offerings which are, to say the least, at either end of the price range.

For the less well-off how about considering a stay at the UK's cheapest Airbnb - Sapphire's Sheppey Car Camping near to the beach in Sheerness, Kent - which will set you back just £8 a night.

Here you can relax and enjoy a good night's sleep on the back seat of a Nissan Juke parked on a large expanse of tarmac. Mod cons include a blow-up mattress, blacked out windows for privacy, a duvet and pillow, a cool bag and coat hanger, a colour changing mood lamp and use of the outdoor toilet in the owners nearby backyard.

However, if you feel that cheap nights in a Nissan aren't the answer and you want to push the boat out why not try Highclere Castle in Berkshire, the stately home known to millions as Downton Abbey and which is now also listed on the Airbnb site.

To coincide with the release of the Downton Abbey film, the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, the castle's real life owners, are giving one couple the chance to "live like a lord or lady" by spending an evening in the place where the hit TV series was filmed.

Airbnb's site listing says the two lucky guests will experience an exclusive evening drinking cocktails in the salon, followed by a traditional dinner with the Earl and Countess in the state dining room, waited on by the family butler (not Carson) before retiring to one of the Gallery bedrooms.

The price for this night in the lap of luxury isn't too steep - just £150 - but worldwide competition will be fierce. The night in question is November 26th and reservation opportunities went live on October 1. To be considered you must have a verified Airbnb profile and send positive reviews.

So what's it to be... downmarket car camping, upmarket Downton, or DialAFlight's great deals?

10 things you didn't know last month

  1. 1. Amazon still open to visitors

The Amazon remains open for travellers keen to experience life in the largest rainforest on the planet, despite concern over destructive wildfires in the region. This is the message from South American tour operators and Brazilian lodges keen to ensure tourism continues to play its role in supporting the Amazon's wildlife, eco-systems and local communities. The region has had nearly twice as many fires this year as it did during the same period last year. The Amazon attracts thousands of travellers every year, drawn by the promise of at least 427 varieties of mammal, 40,000 plant species and more than 1,000 different birds. Many of the fires were in the lesser-visited south and west of the region.
  2. 2. Euro tourist taxes on the rise

The first review of its kind into the use of tourism taxes across Europe has found that such levies are in place in more than 125 destinations in 26 countries, with only nine of the EU member states not yet charging them. ETOA, the trade association for European tour operators, said the practice is becoming more common, with France, Spain and Italy among the most popular destinations to introduce additional visitor taxes.
  3. 3. Tokyo still the safest

Tokyo has been named the safest city in the world for the third year in a row, only just holding off Singapore in second and domestic rival Osaka. The Japanese capital scored 92 out of 100 in the Safe Cities Index 2019, assessed in four security areas - health, digital, personal and infrastructure. London was 14th, up from 20th, with New York 15th. The only European cities in the top ten were Amsterdam (fourth) and Copenhagen (eighth).
  4. 4. Now its gondola rage in Venice

Locals in Venice, already annoyed by the bad behaviour by tourists in the city, where a population of around 53,000 is swamped by more than 20 million visitors a year, have seized on footage of an irate tourist headbutting a gondolier and then punching him in the face. The tourist, said to be from South America, had reportedly been taking selfies of himself and his family in a gondola tethered to a canal bank near St Mark's Square. It all kicked off after the gondolier protested that the boat was private property and the man should get out or pay for a ride.
  5. 5. Fewer flights for Greta's Sweden, but greater for others

Teenage environment campaigner Greta Thunberg may not have convinced many people not to fly, but she seems to have had an impact in her home country of Sweden. Only four European countries have experienced a fall in air traffic this year and Sweden appears to be the only country, probably in the world, where fewer people are flying because of environmental concerns - minus 4.1 per cent for the first six months of 2019. Europe as a whole witnessed a 4.3 per cent increase in air passengers with the likes of Austria, Croatia, Estonia and Ukraine seeing double digit growth and Spain, Portugal and Luxembourg showing above average rises.
  6. 6. Airline flies from pole to pole

Travellers can now book a trip from one pole to the other with just one airline, after Norwegian launched new flights to Ushuaia, the world's southernmost airport and gateway to Antartica. Covering 9,800 miles in 25 hours on four flights, passengers could fly from Svalbard in Norway - the world's northernmost airport - to Oslo, then on to London Gatwick, before embarking on the airline's service to Buenos Aires. The onward journey to Ushuaia would take just under three hours. Norwegian, which launched regional flights in Argentina this year, said the trip would cost from £398.50 one-way.
  7. 7. Is it a case of double Dutch?

It may seem like double Dutch, but moves are afoot to overhaul the international branding strategy of Holland and replacing it with the Netherlands - the country's official name. The Government rebrand is an effort to move away from undesirable associations with Amsterdam's red light district and the country's famous cannabis cafes to encourage exports and tourism. The public relations push will begin later this year featuring prominently on promotions for the Eurovision Song Contest, which will be held in Rotterdam next May. The national football team will only be referred to as the Netherlands, as will the Dutch team in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
  8. 8. South-east Asia dengue warning

British holidaymakers bound for winter sun in south-east Asia have been warned to take precautions to combat a severe dengue fever outbreak spreading across the region. Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Sri Lanka are among the countries reporting significant increases in cases of the disease, which is transmitted by the aedes mosquito. Nepal has become the latest country hit by the outbreak in which more than 8,000 people have been admitted to hospital. Travellers have been advised to wear long sleeves and trousers where mosquitoes are present and apply insect repellent. Dengue can be a fatal viral infection causing debilitating flu-like symptoms including headache, high fever and joint pain.
  9. 9. Midnight at the Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal will soon be open to tourists after sunset, as part of a countrywide project to extend visiting hours to 10 of India's most popular tourist attractions. The existing opening hours are from 10am to 6pm, although the Taj Mahal does welcome tourists for five nights each month, for the full moon and the two nights before and after. The country's tourism ministry is planning to light up the area around the marble monument, which welcomes around 22,000 visitors a day, and develop other improvements to handle the arrival of night time visitors.
  10. 10. Avoiding sitting with the kids

Customers can now avoid sitting next to young children on flights after a Japanese airline introduced a feature that enables people booking flights online to see where children are seated. Japan Airlines, the country's national flag carrier, has added icons of cartoon babies on the website's aircraft seat layouts to pinpoint the location of infants. With a record 4.6 billion passengers expected to take to the skies by the end of this year, airlines and plane manufacturers have been competing to make air travel less uncomfortable.

    My Favourite Holiday

    Kiefer Sutherland loves London...

Actor turned singer Kiefer Sutherland loves London and the wide open Wild West

When was your first trip abroad? I was 17 when I travelled to France to do publicity for The Bay Boy (1984) which was filmed on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. I remember being so broke in France that I would have to stuff myself in the canteen set up for the journalists. I'd smuggle some of their free food out before heading back to my hotel room.

What do you think of the UK? Although I grew up in Canada, I was born in the UK so I have a British passport as well as a Canadian one. When I was a child living with my mother in Toronto, England seemed a very exotic place. Sometimes I would fly over to Europe and spend Christmas with my father (the actor Donald Sutherland).

What's the remotest place you have visited? It is without doubt Wanganui, which was once the site of a major Maori settlement. It's on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. That trip also sticks in my mind for the roughest plane journey I have ever experienced.

How often do you travel? After my role as Jack Bauer in TV's 24 I now devote most of my time to playing with my band. Last year I played more than 100 gigs, which means I am constantly packing my life into a suitcase and travelling back and forth between the United States and Europe. On average I am on the road with my band for three months a year - I only spent a few weeks in total at my Los Angeles home in 2018.

What is your favourite city and hotel? I'm often at Claridge's when I'm visiting London - which is my favourite city in the world. There is something so fantastically old-school about the hotels. I just love wandering around the different parts of Mayfair ,such as Shepherd Market, which gives you a real sense of perspective on the area's amazing architecture.

What were your best film experiences? I love filming westerns off the beaten track in America's heartland. It's increasingly difficult to find locations without any trace of modern life. I remember once when filming we had to journey into the middle of a million acre ranch in Texas to find the right kind of landscape. It was so big it took a couple of hours to get off the ranch afterwards.

What gear do you travel with? I always take an acoustic guitar with me when I go away somewhere - strumming it helps pass the time and I never travel far without my brown or black cowboy boots which are extremely comfortable and hard wearing. I'm also a big fan of cowboy hats and have one or two with me on the road.

Your idea of a perfect holiday? It's to jump on a train and go to a city or town that I've never visited before, walk around, find a nice restaurant and then head to a decent pub for a drink.

Where would you like to go next? It's been a long time since I have just sat on a beach and watched the surf come in. So, when I next take a holiday - and I reckon I am owed one - it's going to be in Hawaii or Bali, which are two of my favourite places in the world.

A selection of customer comments from Trustpilot

    • DialAFlight saved our Wedding Trip

Following the collapse of Thomas Cook and our cancelled Wedding Trip we called DialAFlight and they couldn't have offered a better more personal service. They sourced flights, hotel and transfers, all on the dates requested and their helpfulness and outstanding customer service was amazing. I will never use anyone else again. They were life savers and saved my daughters dreams. Thank you DialAFlight from the bottom of my heart!

Cathy Isaacs gave DialAFlight 5 stars on Trustpilot. Sparkling footnote: Cathy's name was pulled out of the hat in our monthly Trustpilot draw and a case of Prosecco is on its way.
    • Thomas Cook trip solved quickly and cheaply

We were unfortunately one of the Thomas Cook casualties having booked our holiday flight to and from Las Vegas with them. However with the TC collapse and only 5 days to go before our holiday, DialAFlight came to our rescue. I spoke to Marco who quickly managed to find Virgin Atlantic flights that fitted right in with our original plans and saved us a few £'s as well! I cannot praise the company enough for their total courtesy, absolute efficiency and customer service which is without doubt second to none.

Bob Barber gave DialAFlight 5 stars on Trustpilot.
    • Support from start to finish

I had booked British Airways prior to their strike and was left high and dry with no flights out on our anniversary trip to the states. I was more than happy when DialAFlight stepped in and within hours sourced new flights, hotels and car hire - all cheaper than my original booking. They supported me all the way from start to finish. After their efforts for me they will always be my first port of call for any holiday requirements in the future. Thank you DialAFlight.

Nick Claridge gave DialAFlight 5 stars on Trustpilot.
    • Best Travel Agent Ever

Mark and his team are second to none. It is the one stop shop for all of your holiday needs. I can't speak highly enough of them as a travel agent. I have used them for the last 15 years plus and would not go elsewhere. I always do my own research and then ask "can you better it?" and most times they can.
