DialAFlight most trusted for hotel bookings as big names are slammed for misleading customers by watchdog

Some hotel booking sites, despite being ordered to clean up their acts, are continuing to dupe customers with dodgy discount claims and hard-sell tactics.

The Competition & Markets Authority named and shamed Expedia, Booking.com, Trivago, Hotels.com and Ebookers for employing unfair practices and the sites were ordered to stop using measures that could mislead customers, such as not displaying the full cost upfront, giving a false impression of a room's popularity and making dishonest claims about discounts.

The CMA gave the firms until September 1 to resolve the issue, but Which? is now concerned that some of these companies are still misleading customers. A spokesman for the consumer watchdog said: "From September, all savings must be genuine - so a crooked sales pitch could land the company in court.

Pressure tactics such as 'one room left at this price' and 'booked four times in the last 24 hours' can manipulate customers into parting with their cash quickly by giving the impression that the offer is time-limited.

Which? found that such claims may not be genuine. For example, Booking.com was advertising 'the last' double room with private bathroom at an Edinburgh guesthouse when there were, in fact, another seven similar doubles available for the same price.

The editor of Which? Travel, Rory Boland said: "These sites have been getting away with dodgy sales practices for years and while the regulator's intervention is a positive step, millions of holidaymakers are still being duped this summer before changes are made."

If you want to make sure you are never cheated and always get the best deal you know what to do... stick with DialAFlight, the most trusted company for hotel bookings according to Trustpilot.

10 things you didn't know last month

  1. 1. Now it's safe to return to Sri Lanka

The lifting of the UK's travel ban to Sri Lanka has been greeted with relief by the country. The Foreign Office has just declared the island safe for British holidaymakers, close to seven weeks after the Easter bombings that left nearly 300 people dead. But it said a state of emergency remained in place and warned travellers to stay vigilant.
  2. 2. Bid to stop Machu Picchu airport plans

Historians, archaeologists and tourism groups are fighting against the development of a new international airport that will fly tourists direct to the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu in Peru. Plans for the airport at Chinchero - the gateway to the Sacred Valley - were announced in 2012 and bulldozers have now arrived to begin construction. Visitors currently travel to the region via a smaller airport at Cusco, some 50 miles away. A petition has been launched to stop the work on the new hub claiming it will cause "irreparable damage" to a complex Inca landscape.
  3. 3. Rome pilgrim goes roaming

It is said that all roads lead to Rome but, as one elderly driver discovered to his cost, they do not necessarily lead to the right Rome. The 81-year-old man, an Italian who had set off from his home in Newcastle upon Tyne on a trip to the Vatican, was stranded more than 650 miles off course in the West German hamlet of Rom after typing the wrong destination into his sat-nav. Rom is the German spelling for Rome, but the tiny village has no basilica or grand square. Police said that the man was a pilgrim who wished to meet the Pope. However, after he arrived in the forested mountains east of Cologne he seemed to be so taken aback at his mistake that he stepped out of his Jaguar S-type without securing the handbrake. The open door knocked him over as the car rolled backwards and hit a road sign. He was treated in hospital and the car was so badly damaged it was towed away leaving him with a 4,000 euro bill.
  4. 4. Don't linger over that airport kiss

Airports are charging drivers as much as £25 for loitering too long when they drop someone at the terminal. Critics say it means that 'kiss and fly' charges can be more than the cost of a cheap flight to Europe. An audit of drop off charges at Britain's biggest airports reveals that Stansted in Essex charges the biggest minimum fee of £4 for up to 10 minutes. And there are hefty penalties for those who over-stay. Drivers who park for more than 10 minutes have to pay an extra £1 per minute, and they are penalised with a £25 charge if they stay more than 15 minutes.
  5. 5. New scanners to end luggage liquids ban

Air passengers may be able to keep liquids and laptops in their cabin bags as they go through security when more powerful scanners are deployed. Heathrow says the new scanners will be installed by 2022 to detect explosives at a cost of £50 million. Computer tomography, which is used by doctors to examine organs and tissues, is already being used to check luggage stored in aircraft holds. Scanners using the technology produce detailed, three dimensional images at higher speeds than regular X-ray devices.
  6. 6. Financial dressing down for wearing a bikini

Tourists caught wearing a bikini in Venice, a city already beset by so many regulations affecting visitors, will be hit with a hefty fine under the city's new 'decorum' rules. Fines of up to £440 will also be imposed on visitors tempted to take a dip in the canals or those caught sitting or lying down on the steps of bridges and in the doorways of historic monuments, as well as in front of shop windows. In a bid to crack down on anti-social behaviour, the city council also approved rules to punish revellers drinking outside bars at night.
  7. 7. Tourists rush to beat Ayers Rock climbing ban

Tourists are rushing to the Red Centre of Australia to trek up Ayers Rock before a climbing ban comes into force later this year. Accommodation is filling up around the sacred rock Uluru with more and more travellers planning last-minute trips to tackle the sandstone monolith before hiking up it is restricted from October 26. The closure of the climb was announced in 2017 after the Aboriginal traditional owners of Uluru declared that the site was "not Disneyland."
  8. 8. TV boost for Chernobyl tours

Interest in tours of the exclusion zone around Chernobyl have soared in recent weeks in the wake of the critically acclaimed TV series of the same name. One tour operator that runs trips to the abandoned nuclear power plant two hours from Kiev said bookings are up 40 per cent for summer months compared with last year. The HBO five-part series, about events following the 1986 explosion that led to the world's worst nuclear power plant disaster, ended earlier this month. Visitors to the area are subjected to a small dose of radiation and told to wear long sleeves and closed shirts.
  9. 9. France still the most popular

France remained the most visited country in the world in 2018, according to figures that show it welcomed more than 93 million people. The latest statistics from the World Tourism Organisation, just released, showed an unchanged top five, with Spain in second place, followed by the US, China and Italy. Turkey registered the greatest change moving from eighth to sixth and with Germany and Thailand rising in the rankings too, the UK was pushed back into 10th place.
  10. 10. Think before you show off the ink in Japan

Tattoo-bearing rugby fans heading out to Japan for the World Cup later this year must cover them with patches if they wish to enjoy a post-match soak in selected hot-spring onsen baths. Tattoos in Japan are traditionally associated with criminal gangs and banned in onsen and some gyms and pools. The UK Foreign Office has issued guidance to fans travelling to Japan in September and October, urging them to be "responsible and respectful" adding: "loud boisterous behaviour in public is not the norm in Japan."

    My Favourite Holiday

Geri doesn't need glitz to enjoy her holiday...

Spice Girl Geri Horner tells of Richard Branson's rescue mission, and how she loves a cuppa on the beach

Your first holiday memory? Childhood holidays were spent rock climbing at my grandmother's house in the Spanish province of Huesca, right at the bottom of the Pyrenees. When visiting in winter my family and I would strap ourselves into some skis and hit the powder. It was a left of centre ski school education, I'll say that much.

Do you prefer beaches to the slopes? Asking me to choose between the two is like asking me to pick a favourite child. You can't beat Mustique for beaches and Courchevel for a spot of slalom. That does sound quite decadent, but I honestly don't need glitz to enjoy myself on holiday, I just need space.

How did being a Spice Girl open up the world for you? It did so in ways that I could never have imagined. I'll never forget going on safari and later meeting Nelson Mandela in South Africa in 1997. One time our gig in Portugal had overrun, which meant we just missed our flight back to London. It was near the end of our tour and we were all shells of our former selves, but within the hour Richard Branson had sent a private jet to scoop us all up.

Where would you still like to visit? Peru was not on my radar until I watched Paddington 2 with Hugh Grant which made me laugh and cry in equal measure. It's also the only place in the world where my Angels in Chains, the tribute single I released a couple of years ago in memory of my late friend George Michael, reached number one. Once I've made it to China and after I've seen polar bears in the Arctic, I'm booking tickets over there.

What do you like to do on holiday? Sipping tea with the sand between my toes is one of my favourite travel quirks. There's nothing quite like it. Bring me a brew at about five o'clock, when the heat of the sun is waning and people have cleared off the beach. A seaside cuppa is even better at six o'clock - optimum conditions for getting nose-deep in a good book which, as an author, I often am.

How was preparing for the latest Spice Girls tour? It's been like preparing for a marathon. Tour diets always require plenty of nutritionally complex food, lots of mineral water and more than a few home comforts of course. Outside of the rehearsal studio I did Iyengar yoga - the restorative poses work wonders. By the time we wrap up this month I'm going to need a holiday.

Do you ever feel guilty about taking a holiday? No. The delicious irony is that, when I've had a really good time - a bit of me time - it makes me a better parent anyway and I perform better at work. I go back to my normal life feeling so much better after a proper pit stop.

A selection of customer comments from Trustpilot

    • Nothing was too much trouble

I have just returned from a trip to America having booked the flights with DialAFlight the service I received was excellent. I had to speak to the company a few times to arrange assistance for my disabled son, to book seats and finally for help when checking in online. Nothing was too much trouble and I was always treated in a friendly and polite manner. I will use the company again with confidence.

Terry Foord gave DialAFlight 5 stars on Trustpilot. Sparkling footnote: Terry's name was pulled out of the hat in our monthly Trustpilot draw and a case of Prosecco is on its way.
    • The perfect surprise trip planned

James helped me plan an amazing surprise trip for my fiance's birthday to New York. He helped plan every detail right down to the restaurant where we had his birthday meal. Couldn't recommend his services enough. More than happy to help with anything I asked him, honestly made it the best trip. I couldn't have planned it without him. Thank you so much!

    • DialAFlight saved us from Champions League panic!

My husband and son were trying to get to the UEFA cup final in Madrid, after being let down by Thomas Cook on a package through Spurs. Zane and his colleagues were amazing in sorting out flights and a hotel, putting up with all our follow-up calls when they were in panic mode over not being allowed to check in etc online. Can't rate this service highly enough.

    • Attentive service with a personal touch

Our go-to place for flights. They really do answer their phone after one or two rings and always answered by a human. They find the best flights by price, their car hire prices are hard to beat. They make it feel very personal, even call up a few days beforehand to make sure everything is still as we need it. Great job Arthur!

    • Worth every penny!

I have used DialAFlight for years and they have proved themselves to be excellent value and very efficient. The team are friendly and helpful on the phone, offering valuable advice based on their vast experience. Recently, Damian arranged a great deal for my trip to the US last week and last year the team got me home quickly from France when my EasyJet flight was cancelled. You get what you pay for. Worth every penny!
