Want to avoid holiday hell? Then spend a little more on your car hire

It's a headline from the Times but we could have written it ourselves. For years we've been advising customers not to buy the cheapest car rental and now the Times newspaper agrees.

We receive more complaints about car rental than anything else and in an article James Coney explains why it's worth paying a little extra to avoid what he calls 'travel torture.'

He says he's given up on budget rentals as there is no surer way to get a family holiday off to a bad start than queuing up with hundreds of other people in a car hire queue. Watch out too, he says, if your airline trumpets a partnership with a particular rental company as there is a good chance many people on your flight will have booked with the same company and this will guarantee a queue.

He now tends to stick with bigger firms, often signing up for loyalty programmes which allow members to join an express lane. He says the cost is a little bit more, say £100 for a standard mid size saloon on a fortnight's rental, but reckons that's a small price to pay in case something goes wrong.

In a recent survey consumer champion Which? said that 50% of people reported problems with Interrent and 42% with Goldcar, which has been mired in customer service issues with complaints about filthy vehicles, mystery charges and stand-offs over additional fees. Both are owned by Europcar.

But even the best known car firms are not immune from complaints. Rental staff are expected to top up low wages with commission so you should always expect a hard sell on upgrades and extras.

Although we include CDW with all rentals the excess is often increased, sometimes to as much as $1000, simply to push you into taking top up insurance which can add up to £150 to your bill

Our travel managers can reduce this excess liability completely for just a few pounds a day!

12 things you didn't know last month

  1. 1. Good deals as Sri Lanka is back in business

With Sri Lanka back on the travel map after a two month hiatus, travel companies have been cutting rates to persuade tourists to return. Sri Lankan Airlines is offering amazing fares to the capital Colombo. Vivanta By Taj Bentota are offering great value stays with savings of £500 on a 7 night stay at the luxury beach resort. The country is no longer off limits, but the Foreign Office urges visitors to be vigilant and expect delays at airports.
  2. 2. Fury at Eurostar booze crackdown

Angry holidaymakers have hit out at Eurostar's decision to ban them from bringing spirits on board as part of a crackdown on alcohol. Under new luggage rules, each passenger is restricted to a maximum of one bottle of wine or four bottles or cans of beer. This applies even to gifts or if the passenger doesn't drink the alcohol on the journey. Spirits have been banned despite being sold in small bottles on the train. Passengers wanting to take extra alcohol with them will have to pay £30 to use the EuroDespatch service, which might be carried on a later train. Previously passengers could bring up to 12 bottles or cans of beer, or six bottles of wine, or three bottles of spirits.
  3. 3. Qatar Airways is back on top

Qatar Airways has scooped the top prize at the annual World Airline Awards, dubbed the Oscars of the aviation industry, regaining a title it last held in 2017. The Middle Eastern carrier pipped Singapore Airlines, last year's winner, to the gong, with Japan's All Nippon Airways third. Only one European airline, Lufthansa, made the top 10, while the top rated North American carrier was Air Canada, in 31st place. There was good news for British carriers, however, Virgin Atlantic, after a poor showing last year, leapt eight places to 21st, while the Champagne corks will be popping at British Airways HQ - its position has risen from 31st in 2018 to 19th this year.
  4. 4. Cruising is getting cool

Tattoo parlours, peloton classes and DJ sets from Mark Ronson do not make for your stereotypical cruise holiday. But these are just a small selection of the millennial-focused activities cruise lines now offer. Younger generations are showing the highest level of interest in ocean cruises, according to Mintel, the London-based market research company. Of those interested in taking one in the next five years, 38 per cent were aged 16 to 34, 28 per cent were 35 to 54 and only 28 per cent were over 55. Cruises are becoming more popular in general, too. The number of sea cruises taken by UK and Ireland passengers hit two million for the first time last year.
  5. 5. Spanish crackdown on scooters

Benidorm is to ban scooters and Segways from pavements as part of a country-wide clampdown on "uncivic tourism" with Barcelona and Madrid announcing similar measures. Benidorm police also raided souvenir stalls selling chocolate genitalia and other raunchy tourist favourites. "Ban scooters and boozy parties and Benidorm will just become a ghost town", warned one British visitor.
  6. 6. Sleeping passenger left in the dark

An air passenger who fell asleep on a flight woke up a few hours after landing to find herself alone and in the dark on an empty plane. Tiffani Adams had been on a 90 minute flight and awoke in a 'cold and dark' place after all the passengers and crew had disembarked. Her phone had died and she couldn't charge it because all power had been switched off. Miss Adams made SOS signals by shining a torch out of a window but when nobody saw them she unbolted a cabin door and waved to ground crew who rescued her. A spokesman for Air Canada, who operated the flight between Quebec and Toronto, said the airline was reviewing the matter.
  7. 7. Posh drinks with prices to match

If you can't resist raiding your hotel minibar, steer clear of London's five star establishments. A comprehensive survey by Telegraph Travel of prices at 84 properties has revealed some staggering mark-ups. The most expensive G&T - priced at £23 - was found at 45 Park Lane. That's around the same as a one litre bottle of Gordons costs on the high street. The Marriott County Hall Hotel has the priciest minibar lager, at £12. The most expensive room service club sandwich comes courtesy of The Churchill, where lovers of the chicken, bacon and egg creation will need to fork out £31, including £5 for delivery.
  8. 8. Our passport slips in world rankings

The British passport has slipped further down the ranking of the world's most powerful travel documents, according to the latest analysis. Japan and Singapore sit at the top of the table curated by citizenship and planning firm Henley and Partners, with holders of their passports enjoying visa free access to more countries in the world than any other - 189 out of a possible 218. South Korea slipped to third, alongside Finland and Germany. The UK, which topped the rankings in 2015, is now in 16th place, valid in 183 destinations and tied with six others, including the US and Belgium.
  9. 9. Joe has a go at ice cream chancers

The owner of a trendy ice cream van in Los Angeles has vowed to charge social media influencers double after growing irritated with requests for free treats in exchange for a favourable Instagram post. Joe Nicchi, owner of CVT Soft Serve, told those who make a living advertising products and places on social media that they are gross. "We truly don't care if you're an influencer or how many followers you have", he said in an Instagram post. "We will never give you a free ice cream in return for a post on your social media page. It's literally a four dollar item... well now it's eight for you."
  10. 10. Now its the Taj on a timer

Strict entry times and a three hour stay limit have been imposed on visits to India's famous Taj Mahal. Those who outstay their welcome or miss their slot will have to buy another £11.30 ticket. The Archaeological Survey of India, which administers the white marble monument in Agra, said that with up to 50,000 visitors a day it had no choice.
  11. 11. Worst airlines for UK flight delays revealed

Vueling Airlines has been named as the worst airline for delayed flights when leaving the UK. On average, the Spanish carrier's UK departures took off 31 minutes late in 2018 - the longest time out of 43 airlines investigated. They were closely followed by Thomas Cook Airlines, which had the second worst performance, with flights typically taking off around 24 minutes later than scheduled. Wizz Air scored third place with 23 minutes delay, while both Norwegian Air UK and Eurowings had an average of 22 minutes.
  12. 12. 'New' name for Ryanair 737 Max

A Boeing 737 Max due to be delivered to Ryanair has had the model's name changed on the livery, further fuelling speculation that the manufacturer and airlines will seek to rebrand the troubled plane. Photos have emerged of a repainted 737 Max in Ryanair colours outside Boeing's manufacturing hub, with the name 737 Max replaced by 737-8200 on the nose.

This memorable three day tour is a must when staying in northern India. The legendary Golden Temple of Amritsar, which stands in a beautiful blue lake, is actually just a small part of the huge gurdwara complex known to all Sikhs as Harmandir Sahib. Spiritually, the focus of attention is the tank that surrounds the gleaming central shrine - the Amrit Sarovar, from which Amritsar takes its name. Ringed by a marble walkway, the tank is said to have healing powers and pilgrims come from around the world to bathe in its sacred waters.

    My Favourite Holiday

Andrew has travelled every year since he was 14...

Former cricket star and Top Gear presenter Andrew Flintoff loves travel and one day hopes to become a rocket man

How often do you travel? I have travelled every year since I was 14 for my cricketing career. My first trip abroad was to Argentina for the Preston and Blackpool School's under 19 cricket trip. Then, when I was 15, I went to South Africa for a month. We played in Cape Town, Bloemfontein and the strangely named city of East London during a month long tour. I used to love playing in Zimbabwe - the people were brilliant and we'd go fishing in dams, which I always enjoyed.

What's your best travel experience? The best thing I've done since retiring from cricket was a show for the Discovery Channel called Alone in the Wild. I got dropped off in the Okavango Delta, and spent a week camping alongside elephants and giraffes. Filming Freddie Flintoff Goes Wild was pretty cool too. One time I traipsed through Tanzania with the Maasai in pursuit of the wildebeest migration, and another time I spent a week living with indigenous people in the remote wilderness of Arnhem Land in Australia. As life experiences go, you can't get much better than that.

What do you like to do on holiday? I have the skin of a Ginger so you'll never find me flopped out on a sun lounger. On family holidays I want a gym so I can train, and a pool to keep the kids entertained. It always takes a while for me to switch off. The first week I'm usually a bit edgy, but in the second week I really chill out.

Do you make friends on holidays? I'd rather not, thanks very much. When the kids meet people and their parents want to do something together, I'm always on high alert. I simply don't understand these people who have 'holiday friends' and see them once a year. If you like them that much then why not see them all year round? Nor do I want to bump into anyone I know.

Do you ever fancy going Glamping? I will never do it, that much is certain. I've slept in jungles and on African plains but the thought of pitching up on a campsite where you are 5ft away from another family and have to share a shower block doesn't appeal at all. I wouldn't mind a bit of wild camping in Scotland though.

What gear do you travel with? I'm pretty clued up on my sun creams as I burn so easily and I've found that Riemann P20 does the job pretty well. Whenever I go away I always have a pair of Nike Air Max trainers with me. They're comfortable, classic and long lasting. And I always use Jacamo luggage.

Do you enjoy a spot of luxury? Jamie Redknapp won't settle for anything less than luxury when we're filming A League of Their Own. While we get to stay in beautiful places, such as the Hotel Hermitage in Monaco, I have to admit I do sometimes feel like a fish out of water. Monaco was not my cup of tea - food and drink were just so expensive there. Jamie and I have another road trip in the pipeline but the producers have yet to tell us where.

How would you fancy space travel? A the moment it looks a little pricey. but catching a rocket out to the stratosphere is on my to-do list. In the meantime I'd like to visit the Poles and to scope out more of South Africa and South America.

A selection of customer comments from Trustpilot

    • Simply the best for everyone!

Being a pensioner I find some things hard to understand on the internet. So from the moment I phoned DialAFlight wanting a flight to Hong Kong they straight away reassured me by simply finding me a flight, booking it and then keeping in touch.

Whenever I phoned about probably simple things, they took the time to explain everything I asked about without hurrying and with patience. I cannot recommend them highly enough for looking after me from the first moment of phoning them.

Donna Holman gave DialAFlight 5 stars on Trustpilot. Sparkling footnote: Donna's name was pulled out of the hat in our monthly Trustpilot draw and a case of Prosecco is on its way.
    • Couldn't recommend them enough

DialAFlight were recommended to me by a friend. I was sceptical at first but thought I would give them a go. They quoted me £300 less than Virgin for the same flights and better level of car hire. So I took the deal and paid my money. Oliver was the agent assigned to me and he was top class. The company offers a very personal approach and I would definitely be using them again.

    • Superb customer experience before, during and after the trip

I was trying to book flights to Madrid for the Champions League Final in June, and Aidan Pinder in the London office did an amazing job of finding us a (relatively) inexpensive option given the huge price hikes the airlines were putting in place. We then had an issue with delays out of London which meant we were going to miss our connecting flight to Madrid.

With little assistance available on-site at the airport, Aidan stepped up again and spent several hours finding us alternative options that meant we'd make it to Madrid, which we did. Aidan and the team have also been helping us since the trip with our compensation claim. One of the best customer support experiences I've had - big thanks to Aidan and will certainly be using DialAFlight again for future trips.

    • Great service every time

I have been using DialAFlight for many years now and won't book with anyone else! We travel to USA 2-3 times in a year and we always call our travel manager on his direct line and he always gets us a great deal beating rivals every time. We book our car, flights, accommodation and even park tickets with no problem.

Paul B gave DialAFlight 5 stars on Trustpilot.
    • Great service on the phone

Better than the Internet and the High Street. I'm two trips down with DialAFlight and won't be going anywhere else for my holiday bookings. I'm more than comfortable with internet shopping but Robin has been fantastic and found far better deals at far better locations. So don't think that the internet is best, to actually speak to someone has major merits.

Richard gave DialAFlight 5 stars on Trustpilot.
