From its library to the games room, the stone-clad fireplaces, leather sofas and exposed beams throughout Stonefly Lodge give this exclusive luxury hotel the atmosphere of a heritage country house. Located a short drive from Nelson, and close to three national parks, it overlooks the Motueka River in a peaceful and lush corner of New Zealand’s South Island.
There are just four rooms at Stonefly Lodge, two in each of the building’s wings, giving them a private and peaceful feel. The décor is in serene neutrals with rustic touches in the wood furniture and leather tub chairs, while the spacious balconies make the perfect spot for a home-cooked breakfast.
Motueka River is among some of the best fly-fishing waters in New Zealand, and there’s no shortage of other world-renowned fishing rivers nearby to choose from. Abel Tasman, Nelson Lakes and Kahurangi national parks are all also accessible from the lodge: head out to explore golden beaches, take a boat cruise, or watch out for local animal and birdlife on a bush walk. Back at Stonefly Lodge, you can enjoy an in-room massage, and even pick fruit in the surrounding gardens.
Watch the chef at work in the beautiful dining room, which offers up local seasonal produce, including vegetables and herbs from the lodge’s own garden, and wines from the many nearby vineyards. If you’d prefer to dine in the privacy of your own room, that can be arranged, too.
