General

The 5-star Otahuna Lodge is a luxury hotel housed in an impressive Victorian mansion once a private residence, hidden away in the town of Tai Tapu, just 20 minutes from the centre of Christchurch city on New Zealand’s South Island. Surrounded by glorious, lush gardens against a backdrop of a fluted ancient volcano, it combines old-world charm with modern style, offering stylish surroundings and sophisticated dining. To get here, it’s just a 25-minute drive from Christchurch International Airport.

Room Description

Guests staying at the Otahuna Lodge have seven suites to choose from, each a little bit different from the other, offering the ultimate in refined comfort. They’re all tastefully decorated in an elegant style featuring a neutral colour scheme and classical furnishings, such as upholstered armchairs, morning tables, chaise lounges, ornate Victorian fireplaces, inglenook seating and stained glass windows. The Rhodes Suite boasts a palatial bedroom and an octagonal sitting room, the botanical suite is the house’s original morning room, featuring a floor-to-ceiling mantle with gingerbread woodwork, a wood-burning fireplace and access to the garden, while the Clarke Suite looks out across to the Port Hills.

Activities

There’s plenty to do around the village of Tai Tapu, such as hiking, horse riding, fly-fishing, golf and mountain biking. Or why not enjoy a trip to Arthur’s Pass National Park, where you’ll enjoy a guided tour around the moss-laden forests teeming with streams and waterfalls, before a picnic lunch? Back at the hotel, guests can enjoy a massage, a dip in the pool, gym session or game of tennis.

Dining

The hotel’s Dining Room restaurant boasts chic surroundings that combines ornate original wallpaper, a roaring fireplace and silver candlesticks which reflect the Victorian era. Here, guests can enjoy a gourmet five-course degustation menu which changes daily and features a menu of dishes creating using fresh, local produce. For something more intimate, dinner for two can be served in the sunken wine cellar which is also the place for wine tasting and wine pairings with dinner.
