A gracious Edwardian villa built in 1901, the Peppertree is situated in the heart of the world–famous Marlborough wine region, in the north east of New Zealand’s South Island. The Peppertree offers five charming boutique-style luxury suites, each with its own character – The Garden, William Morris, Dormer, Sunset and Venetian – each one featuring its the own fireplace, verandah or balcony. All the rooms have direct dial phones, twin or king-sized beds – the Dormer suite is tucked away high up under the dormer roof up a short flight of stairs and is perfect for honeymooners with its white queen-sized bed draped in muslin. It’s balcony over looks the courtyard and garden with a backdrop of magnificent mountains in the distance. The Garden Suite has French doors leading into a pretty private garden, while the William Morris Suite is decorated with antiques and original wallpaper, and features a tiled fireplace and claw-foot bath. The hotel has a lovely swimming outdoor pool surrounded with sunloungers and umbrellas, and well-planted gardens to stroll in; there’s lawn croquet pétanque, and a small gym to keep up your daily workout. You can feed the friendly sheep in the paddock, and visit the Cobb Cottage museum on the estate. Beyond the hotel the stunning Marlborough region and the Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds are waiting for you to explore, with sea cruises, winery and farm tours, retreats, eco-tours and walking tracks. For golf enthusiasts there seven courses within a 20km radius, and a driving range to practise your swing.
On arrival at Peppertree, you will be welcomed with a glass of Peppertree Chardonnay on the wisteria-clad veranda, which sets the scene for the whole visit. Breakfast is served in the elegant dining room or on the verandah, and dinner is served by prior arrangement by candlelight in the dining room – or you can choose to share a platter for two in the garden – with homemade produce, chutney and relish, walnuts and olives grown on he property, served, of course with a glass of wine. Marlborough has a great selection of restaurants to sample, and your hosts are happy to make reservations.
