A tiered, cedar-clad construction that blends beautifully into its hillside position, Cliff Edge By the Sea overlooks the South Pacific ocean in the Bay of Islands region of New Zealand. It’s a cosy home-from-home, with a plush lounge area of Persian rugs, open fire and antique furniture, and a large verandah that makes the most of the beautiful views of the bay dotted with yachts and distant islands.
Just four guest bedrooms give Cliff Edge By the Sea the feel of a private home, and the inviting décor of rimu-wood furniture and silk curtains only adds to that relaxed and homely vibe. Each room has an en suite bathroom and private balcony, while the Waitangi room has a four-poster bed and Jacuzzi. There’s also a one-bedroom studio apartment with kitchenette and lounge.
There’s lots to do in the surrounding area, with the main focus on outdoor pursuits, from kayaking to diving to hiking (the Opua to Paihia coastal walk can be joined from Cliff Edge By the Sea). Excursions that can be arranged from nearby Paihia include trips to Cape Reinga – the most northern tip of New Zealand and sacred to the Maori – and sand-boarding on the dunes at 90-Mile Beach.
Breakfast, of seasonal fruits, local meats and sweet pancakes, is included, while dinner is a must-have extra. The award-winning chef focuses on sustainable ingredients, including local lamb and beef, and organic vegetables. And keen fishermen are invited to bring back their catch for the chef to prepare and serve.
