Located in the oasis town of San Pedro de Atacama in the North of Chile, this unique retreat is one of South America’s best. With just eight spacious cottages, this luxury lodge is small and intimate while the exquisite design mixes local materials of stone, adobe and wood. The lodge has an outdoor pool, spacious outdoor lounge areas warmed by open fireplaces, a library and welcomes children. Visit and discover the volcanoes, salt flats, blue lagoons, steaming geysers and rolling dunes of the spectacular Atacame Desert with a private guide and 4x4 vehicle.
Each of the eight thatched cabanas is furnished with dark wood and wicker in authentic Atacameñan style. The bedrooms have king-sized beds, elegant writing tables, alpaca blankets, outdoor showers and private patios. Bathrooms of marble boast twin sinks, a sunken bath and a tray of amenities including a hand-carved wooden comb and toiletries including lip balm, shampoo, body lotion and home-made mint and lemon soap. The evening turn-down service includes an Awasi chocolate in a cactus box and a woven mat laid by the bedside. Each room is assigned a private guide and 4x4 vehicle to embark on tailored outings to the surrounding area.
There’s a plethora of activities available at Awasi including private guided tours to see the flamingos at Salar de Atacama, the El Tatio geyser field, the Moon Valley, Chiu Chiu and Toconao villages, high mountain plateaus, the fortress of Pukara Lasana and the lakes of Miscanti and Miñiques. Hiking, biking and horseback tours are also available. Specialist activities include art classes, bird watching, astronomy, photography classes and cookery classes in an open kitchen.
Wake up to a breakfast of fruits, yoghurts and cereals delivered to your room. Lunch is a light affair at high altitude with freshly made soups and dessert parfaits. At sundown a fire is lit and the lights are dimmed to allow for perfect viewing of the night sky under a cosy alpaca blanket. The fine-dining restaurant offers a sophisticated local and international menu including dishes such as purple potatoes, quinoa and chañar (a meaty, sweet fruit). Guests are welcome to take recipes home or learn new cooking tips in the open kitchen. The bar stocks a selection of premium liquors, and a good selection of wines from all regions of Chile.
