If you’ve never stayed in a cave before, here’s your chance – at the award-winning Cappadocia Cave Suites, which bring modern comforts to traditional cave dwellings used since ancient times. The suites are located within the small town of Goreme, surrounded by the fairy chimneys for which the area is famous – and all within the Goreme National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kayseri Airport is one and a half hour’s drive away, while it takes about an hour to transfer from Nevsehir Airport.
Each one of the 36 rooms is different, though all are beautifully furnished and made from hand-carved local stone. Some rooms feature 200-year-old ceilings and one contains original 8th-century frescoes. You can choose from fairy chimney suites and Cappadocian deluxe rooms. Features vary according to the room type but may include natural air-conditioning, minibar, LCD TV, Jacuzzi, towel warmer, fireplace, espresso machine and/or a separate seating area.
There’s much to see and do when you decide to emerge from your cosy room or suite. As well as taking to the skies in one of the area’s many famous hot-air balloon trips, you can hike round the national park, attend a whirling dervish ceremony, take a horseback excursion, potter round the nearby open-air museum and or visit the area’s underground highlights.
The hotel’s Historia Restaurant serves a breakfast and dinner buffet featuring a variety of fresh, local dishes. Or if the fancy something lighter, Sunset Café will supply you with light bites and spectacular views.
