Just 36km from Catania airport on the sun-drenched island of Sicily, Monaci Delle Terre Nere is a Eco-Bio certified boutique hotel created from a 19th century monastery set within an organic estate on the slopes of Mount Etna. With luxuriant terraced gardens, it is surrounded by UNESCO heritage sites, archaeological gems, ancient seaside villages, waterfalls, vineyards, beaches and beautiful countryside.
Accommodation at Monaci Delle Terre Nere is in the form of 15 rooms in the main building and several suites scattered throughout buildings on the estate. Every room is individually designed with different features. It might have an exposed stone wall, a log burning stove or an open fireplace; polished wooden floors, beamed ceilings, a cowskin rug, a sea or garden view, double doors out onto a private patio… Throughout however, warm stone Sicilian architecture is cleverly combined with contemporary art and with no TV or telephones nothing will disturb your peace and tranquility throughout your stay. Bathrooms are luxuriously modern in somewhat monastic settings, and feature deep soaking tubs or huge rainfall showers and plenty of chrome, glass and white fluffy towels and robes, and Suite Depenance Fragrante boasts a large outdoor deck with whirlpool bath.
Here at Monaci Delle Terre Nere you can be as active or as lazy as you wish. Relax in the sun beside the outdoor pool, with a drink from the poolside bar and wonderful views of the rolling countryside and the sea in the distance, or take a stroll in the pretty gardens and soak up the sun on the terrace. There are yoga and pilates classes, and massage, and bikes are available to hire so you can enjoy the surrounding countryside at your leisure or as part of a tour; there are Sicilian cooking classes, as well as oil and wine tasting and classes with experts from the Etna Wine School, or immerse yourself in a good book in the reading room. Further afield, there are many natural, historical and archeological sites to explore, from Mount Etna and Noto, a site of beautiful baroque architecture; the historical towns of Siracusa, and Ortigia, Catania, and Taormina, and the Alcantara lava gorges with their ice cold waterfalls.
Being set on an organic farm, the food and wine at Monaci delle Terre Nere are a top priority, with a vast delicious buffet breakfast of homemade bread and jams, organic eggs , fruit and freshly squeezed juices, served either on the terrace overlooking the estate and the Mediterranean or in the old wine press in the winter. The restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner, and the menus are based on fresh products, with as much produce coming from the farm as possible – and of course washed down with the Etna wines for which the farm and region are renowned, including the Nerello mascalese or Cappuccio.
