Azienda Agricola Mandranova is set only 45km away from Comiso airport, on a working farm just a few miles from the coast of south Sicily in Palma di Montechiaro. Perched on a hilltop and surrounded by olive groves from which owners Silvia and Giuseppe produce their award-winning olive oil, Mandranova is an utterly charming boutique hotel with friendly owners, where guests can relax and enjoy stunning surroundings and warm Sicilian hospitality.
Accommodation at Azienda is in the form of 13 rooms in the ancient Farmhouse, and in the renovated rooms of an old train station and winery. Rooms are comfortable and elegant , with antique beds and rustic features such as exposed stone walls and beamed ceilings, some with different levels, but all with the emphasis on conviviality and individuality. All the rooms have flat screen TVs, air conditioning, and bottled water, while bathrooms have such delights as quartz floors and home made olive oil soap, as well as bath products by Culti. There are two apartments that are also available on either self-catering or b&b basis depending on the season.
The hotel has a small swimming pool, that was formerly an irrigation tank for the farm and looks down over the olive trees and fields of the farm. Nothing here is normal here – even the violet-tinted water of the swimming pool is good for the skin thanks to a high sulphur content. You can relax in the reading room, and there are regular cookery classes, where ingredients are picked straight from the gardens, and olive-oil soap making classes. The hotel’s own boat, Tornado is available for day trips along the coastline, stopping at an island for lunch and spotting dolphins along the way, then returning to Port Licati for the daily fish market.
Owner Silvia serves up traditional Sicilian dishes in the Mandranova restaurant incuding torta di mandorle – or almond cake – or timballo di anelletti – or Sicilian ring pasta with peas and aubergine – served with delicious local wine, and more often than not, with the hotel dogs settled beside your feet. In the summer ask for one of the tables beside the main house, or casale, where you can dine alfresco by candlelight., There is no actual bar but drinks are available until 11pm, and room service includes tapenade, local cheeses, Sicilian wines, bread and olive oil between 9am and 8pm. There are several local restaurants nearby that must be visited too.
