Located in South Africa’s malaria-free Eastern Cape, Pumba Water Lodge offers luxurious but eco-friendly accommodation in breathtakingly beautiful surroundings, and unrivalled game-watching opportunities. This is the place to spot the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant) as well as the possibility of seeing the White Lion and over 250 species of bird.
Pumba Lodge’s 12 stone-walled thatched chalets are set on a network of meandering timber footpaths and come in two categories, with everything you could wish for to make this a trip of a lifetime, including private wooden decks, fireplaces, outdoor showers and plunge pools with fabulous views. The eight Impala chalets have four-poster, king or twin beds, while the three Gemsbok chalets offer king or twin beds, and the Kudu suite has two ensuite bedrooms, a private steam room and a separate living area. Décor is suitably safari-lodge like with neutral earthy tones, and mod cons include air con, heating, tea and coffee making facilities, mini bars, electronic safes, telephone and alarm clocks. Sumptuous bathrooms include separate baths and showers, heated towel rails, and twin vanities.
AS well as an outdoor pool and sunbathing deck, Pumba Water Lodge has a Soul Spa, with steam room, gym and plunge pool, as well as a wide range of therapies and treatments such as hot stone massage, manicures, facials and body wraps. But this is a safari lodge, and so animal-appreciation is the order of the day. Pumba offers a programme of day safaris, including the Big 5. All the day safaris include a two and a half hour drive through the Pumba Game Reserve in an open Land Rover, with one of their trained rangers, ending with authentic African meal around the fire at Msenge Boma. Children are welcome, and there is a programme of special kids’ activities including picnics and chocolate moulding, and a library of board games and DVDs to keep them busy in the evenings.
Meals at Pumba are served at the open sided thatched restaurant, either in the central dining room or the main decks, while private candlelit dinners can be arranged available on request.
