Hike around the volcano

Rincón de la Vieja is one of the most active volcanoes in Costa Rica. A towering mountain with nine extraordinary eruption points and standing at over 6,200 feet high, it is part of the Guanacaste Range. The name translates to “the old woman’s corner”. According to legend, the indigenous people named it after an old witch who lived at the top and sent columns of smoke into the air when she was angry.

You take a rigorous but spectacular hike around the area of Las Pailas seeing rare tropical birds and butterflies and three different species of monkeys. The park protects the largest population of wild purple orchids, which is Costa Rica’s National Flower.
