California Horizons

Description

This nine-day tour takes you to all the iconic sights of California, as well as colourful Las Vegas. You'll start out exploring the movie studios and mansions of Los Angeles, before taking in the beautiful Pacific Coast, bohemian San Francisco, the magnificent Yosemite National Park and the 24-hour neon-lit excitement of Vegas.

Day 1
Arrive in Los Angeles

Your tour begins as you arrive at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and check in to your hotel. You then have the rest of the day to begin exploring Los Angeles, entertainment capital of the USA. You'll want to stroll along the Walk of Fame and see the names of celebrities commemorated in pink stars, and to visit Mann's Chinese Theatre, famous for the 200 celebrity hand and footprints in the forecourt. You may also like to drive through Beverly Hills, to see how the rich and famous live.

Day 2
Los Angeles – Santa Barbara – San Simeon

You'll leave Los Angeles this morning and drive towards Santa Barbara on the beautiful Pacific Coast. Here you can stroll through the Santa Barbara Botanic Gardens or hike the nature trails in Los Padres National Forest. If you'd prefer to hit the beach, East Beach is popular with a young and trendy crowd, while Arroyo Burro is the place to head if you prefer fishing or whale watching. You may also like to explore the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and sample the fresh seafood in the many restaurants on Stearn’s Wharf. When you're done exploring, it's time to continue on to San Simeon for your overnight stay.

Day 3
San Simeon – Monterey – San Francisco

This morning you'll take the scenic drive up the Pacific Coast toward Monterey, where you'll spend the afternoon enjoying this artisan city, which still boasts many buildings dating back to its foundation in the 18th century. In the early 20th century Monterey was renowned as the sardine capital of the Western Hemisphere; nowadays the old sardine factories have been converted into restaurants and boutiques. You might like to take a whale-watching trip, or perhaps make the famously scenic 17-mile drive up the coast to Pebble Beach to admire the lavish mansions. Finally, you'll continue on to San Francisco for a two-night stay.

Day 4
San Francisco

Today you can explore San Francisco on board the city's iconic cable cars. Popular sights include picturesque Lombard Street, "the crookedest street in the world", and the shops and restaurants of Chinatown. You may like to visit Muir Woods National Monument, a grove of coastal redwoods, some of which are more than 1,000 years old, or take an optional excursion to the legendary island prison of Alcatraz.

Day 5
San Francisco – Yosemite National Park – Fresno

Today you'll leave the bustle of San Francisco and drive towards the strikingly beautiful Yosemite National Park, to admire the imposing granite cliffs, huge waterfalls, rivers, meadows and groves of giant sequoia trees. After visiting the Valley Visitor Centre you can follow a self-guided trail, or join an optional two-hour Yosemite Valley Tour aboard an open-air tram, guided by Park Rangers.

Day 6
Fresno – Las Vegas

This morning you'll leave the natural beauty and peace of Yosemite for the bright lights of Las Vegas. Here you can take a trip up to the top of the Stratosphere hotel tower, enjoy some luxurious shopping, take in a spectacular show or try your luck in the casinos.

Day 7
Las Vegas - Los Angeles

This morning you'll depart Las Vegas and begin the drive back to Los Angeles. You might like to visit Santa Monica Pier, once known as the "finish line" of legendary Route 66 and now home to an aquarium, amusement park and the famous Hippodrome, a mixture of California, Byzantine and Moorish architecture that has been featured in many films. Movie fans shouldn't miss the Universal Studios Tour.

Day 8
Los Angeles

Today you have a full day to explore the City of Angels. You may like to take the optional Hollywood Trolley Tour: riding in an open-air trolley, you'll enjoy a fully narrated tour of historic Hollywood movie, TV and radio landmarks such as Paramount Studios, Capitol Records and Warner Bros. You'll also visit the filming locations of LA Confidential, Twins, Pretty Woman and more, and see such iconic sights as the Hollywood Bowl, the Hollywood sign and the Walk of Fame.

Day 9
Los Angeles – Los Angeles International Airport

Your adventure comes to an end as you head to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) for your onward journey.

Good customer service - especially Lincoln. But I would never fly with American Airlines again - not a reflection on your service at all though.

Thomas Cook not very reliable. Flight delayed 2 hours on way and on return. Angela's case lost on way and although delivered next day at 4pm USA time she had to buy shoes to wear. Thomas Cook seem to be the cheap flights for long haul. Once you know this you make your choices. DialAFlight customer service great as always
