Beginning and ending in the capital city Lima, this wonderful two week tour takes in all the highlights of this stunning country. On your journey you will soar over the mighty Andes and sample life in the depths of the Amazon jungle, explore the golden city of Cusco, hike the Salkantay trek, encounter the majesty of Machu Picchu, one of the wonders of the natural world, and head out into the deep blue waters of Late Titicaca. You will be escorted throughout the trip and experienced guides will make sure you get the most out of this extraordinary adventure.
You will be met at Lima Airport by one of our tour representatives and taken to your hotel where you will be briefed on all aspects of your travels in Peru. Lima is a friendly city and the rest of the day is yours to explore it. Visit the affluent districts of Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro on the coast and sample the good restaurants and nightlife which is within walking distance of your hotel.
After breakfast and a leisurely morning you will be taken to the airport for your flight to Puerto Maldonado where you prepare for your Amazon adventure. Pack lightly, leaving the rest of your luggage in a safe deposit before boarding your boat at the Tambopata River Port. After a 45 minute boat trip you will arrive at your private forest reserve at Posada Amazonas, in the heart of the rain forest.
After a 20 minute walk from your lodge base at Posadas Amazonas you reach Parrot Clay Lick, where dozens of parrots and parakeets descend on the river bank every morning. Later take a two hour hike in the rain forest where you will see the wildlife and here about the area's history. Later take a boat down river and see life on a local farm. Overnight at Posadas Amazonas.
After breakfast you say farewell to the Amazon and return to Puerto Maldonado for your flight to Cusco. You will be met at the airport and taken to your hotel where there will be a comprehensive briefing about your stay in the area. The rest of the day is at leisure giving you the chance to explore the city and gradually acclimatise to the dramatic change of altitude.
Your guided city tour begins in the afternoon with visits to the impressive Colonial Cathedral and the Temple of the Sun. You will then be taken to the outskirts of the city to see the archaeological site of Sacsayhuaman later visiting the ruins of Puca Pucara. Cusco is a gem of a city and has beautiful squares, cobbled streets and a lively atmosphere.
Early in the morning we will depart from Cusco to the town of Mollepata by private transportation, traveling for about 4 hours. The tour will take a north west direction, crossing the Pampas or Yawar Anta Pampa (Pampa de la Sangre), known for the fierce battle developed between the Incas and Chancas for control of the city of Cusco. We will continue our journey to Mollepata, where we will stop for breakfast and take a short break. Then we will continue our journey through Cruz Pata at 3200 m.a.s.l. to finally reach Soraypampa (3800 m.a.s.l.), the starting point of the trek where we meet our wranglers and horses. After a short introduction, we start our hike towards the base of Mt. Salkantay, crossing Salkantaypampa, and then starting a 2 hrs hike to Soyroccocha, just next to the impressive glacier of Salkantay. Continuing with our adventurel, we reach the Abra Huayracmachay (4600 m.a.s.l.) this will be the highest mountain we would walk trough. Here we will also enjoy stunning views of the surrounding glaciers and the snow-capped peaks of the Vilcabamba Range with the south face of Salkantay towering above us, we may also observe chinchillas and condors in their natural habitat. From this point, we start descending towards a more tropical climate and into the cloud forest. A long though this easy descent we will set up our first campsite at Andenes 3500 meters.
Today we continue our hike with an easy downhill walk along the Salkantay River, enjoying the increasingly lush vegetation, passing waterfalls, fruit and coffee plantations. The arid highland landscape begins to transform into a cloud forest filled with trees and bromeliads. After 1:45 hours we arrive at Chaullay, and after another 45 minutes to the town of Collpapampa. From Collpapampa, the Salkantay River becomes the Santa Teresa River. After a rest, we continue our descent to the banks of the Totora River, then passing the waterfalls at Coripacchi, the settlement at Wiñaypoko, the bustling small town of La Playa and finally our second camp at Lucmabamba (2100 m.a.s.l). On the way we can see plantations of banana, coffee, and avocado, as well as exuberant local flora. At dinner we can enjoy a glass of wine by the light of the camp-fire.
After breakfast we will begin our walk, where we will see there mains of an Inca trail. Continuing east along an ascending path, with direction to Llactapata, we will see more coffee plantations and a beautiful view of the valley of Santa Teresa. After climbing for 3 -4 hours to the highest point of Llactapata at 2700 m.a.s.l. we will enjoy free time to relax and watch the mountain of Machu Picchu and some of these archaeological sites. Then we will descend for 2 hours to the Hydroelectric PowerStation (1870 m), where we will have the last lunch with all our staff. Later we will take our train to Aguas Calientes. In Aguas Calientes, our walkers will be staying in a hostel, and may set out to explore this picturesque town, which offers, apart from its hot springs, many bars, cafes, Internet kiosks, etc.
Early in the morning, at 5:30 am we will move to the bus station of Aguas Calientes, to take the touristic bus that leads to the sacred citadel of Machu Picchu. This short bus ride takes only 20 minutes and covers an unpaved track, very steep and winding through a jungle and mountain properties with breathtaking views. Finally we will arrive to Machu Picchu, where our guide will tour the most important sectors of this beautiful citadel. The walkers will have free time to explore the city on your own to your taste. Around 13:00 hours we will take the bus back to Aguas Calientes, where lunch will be served. In the afternoon were turn to the station to catch the train to Ollantaytambo and then transferred to a tourist bus to return to the city of Cusco.
Today there is free time to shop for souvenirs or visit the many museums and churches in the city. For those with the energy, there are optional activities available including horseback riding around the archaeological sites, white water rafting on the Urubamba River and mountain biking down to the Sacred Valley.
Today you board the Cruz Del Sur bus and travel through the Andean Highlands to Lake Titicaca with tours of Rachi, Andahuayillas and la Raya on route. The drive is beautiful but there is an option to upgrade and take a first class train through the high Altiplano region offering great views of the stark yet beautiful countryside.NB you can upgrade to the Andean Explorer train
Today you head out into the deep clear blue waters of Lake Titicaca to visit the magnificent floating islands of Uros, as well as exploring the paths of Isla Taquile which is filled with quaint little houses and cobbled streets. Titicaca is the biggest lake in the world above 2,000m and the views are stunning. Overnight at your hotel in Puno.
After watching the amazing spectacle of dawn breaking over the lake the morning is at leisure before taking your flight back to the capital city Lima. You will make a short detour on the way to the airport to visit the funeral towers of Sillustani. On arrival in Lima you will be met by one of our representatives and taken to your hotel.
After seeing all the highlights of this wonderful country your adventurous tour ends today. Time for some last minute shopping or sightseeing in Lima before you are taken to the airport for your onward flight or journey home taking with you a lifetime of memories from this very special trip.
