Beginning and ending in the capital city Lima, this wonderful two week tour takes in all the highlights of this stunning country. On your journey you will soar over the mighty Andes and sample life in the depths of the Amazon jungle, explore the golden city of Cusco, walk the famous Inca Trail, encounter the majesty of Machu Picchu, one of the wonders of the natural world, and head out into the deep blue waters of Late Titicaca. You will be escorted throughout the trip and experienced guides will make sure you get the most out of this extraordinary adventure.
You will be met at Lima Airport by one of our tour representatives and taken to your hotel where you will be briefed on all aspects of your travels in Peru. Lima is a friendly city and the rest of the day is yours to explore it. Visit the affluent districts of Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro on the coast and sample the good restaurants and nightlife which is within walking distance of your hotel.
After breakfast and a leisurely morning you will be taken to the airport for your flight to Puerto Maldonado where you prepare for your Amazon adventure. Pack lightly, leaving the rest of your luggage in a safe deposit before boarding your boat at the Tambopata River Port. After a 45 minute boat trip you will arrive at your private forest reserve at Posada Amazonas, in the heart of the rain forest.
After a 20 minute walk from your lodge base at Posadas Amazonas you reach Parrot Clay Lick, where dozens of parrots and parakeets descend on the river bank every morning. Later take a two hour hike in the rain forest where you will see the wildlife and here about the area's history. Later take a boat down river and see life on a local farm. Overnight at Posadas Amazonas.
After breakfast you say farewell to the Amazon and return to Puerto Maldonado for your flight to Cusco. You will be met at the airport and taken to your hotel where there will be a comprehensive briefing about your stay in the area. The rest of the day is at leisure giving you the chance to explore the city and gradually acclimatise to the dramatic change of altitude.
Your guided city tour begins in the afternoon with visits to the impressive Colonial Cathedral and the Temple of the Sun. You will then be taken to the outskirts of the city to see the archaeological site of Sacsayhuaman later visiting the ruins of Puca Pucara. Cusco is a gem of a city and has beautiful squares, cobbled streets and a lively atmosphere.
After an early hotel breakfast you will be picked up and driven to Piskacuchu where you will enter the Inca Trail. Start your hike by crossing the Urubamba River and continuing along its shores through the Sacred Valley. Continue your hike through the Inca city of Llactapata and on to Wayllabamba where you will stay at a ready camp enjoying the evening around an open fire with spectacular views all around.Please Note: Group departures available every Monday Wednesday and Friday
After a camp fire breakfast you will set out to tackle the most difficult section of the trek. After a steady climb you reach the first mountain pass seeing llamas and alpacas grazing. Enter an area of cloud forest, a beautiful and lush mountain jungle where hummingbirds dart from flower to flower. Perhaps see a Spectacled Bear before descending into the Pacaymayo Valley where you camp for the night.
Today you will hike the longest but most impressive part of the Inca Trail. Passing through cloud forests you will climb up from Pacaymayo to a second pass which has spectacular views of the surrounding Andes. Continue to Sayacmarca, one of the best preserved archaelogical complexes along the trail then on to Winaywayna where you trekker lodge has hot showers and a bar.
Wake early for the hike up to Intipunku (the Sun Gate) for perhaps the most celebrated site in all of Latin America . . . the sun rising over Machu Picchu. After registering at the site begin a two hour guided tour of the famous ancient ruins. Plenty of time later to explore on your own with the more adventurous climbing to the top of Huayna Picchu for fabulous views. Later pick up the train at Aguas Calientes and travel back to Cusco. A stay at Aquas Calientes and another day at Machu Picchu can be arranged.
Today there is free time to shop for souvenirs or visit the many museums and churches in the city. For those with the energy, there are optional activities available including horseback riding around the archaeological sites, white water rafting on the Urubamba River and mountain biking down to the Sacred Valley.
Today you board the Cruz Del Sur bus and travel through the Andean Highlands to Lake Titicaca with tours of Rachi, Andahuayillas and la Raya on route. The drive is beautiful but there is an option to upgrade and take a first class train through the high Altiplano region offering great views of the stark yet beautiful countryside.NB you can upgrade to the Andean Explorer train
Today you head out into the deep clear blue waters of Lake Titicaca to visit the magnificent floating islands of Uros, as well as exploring the paths of Isla Taquile which is filled with quaint little houses and cobbled streets. Titicaca is the biggest lake in the world above 2,000m and the views are stunning. Overnight at your hotel in Puno.
After watching the amazing spectacle of dawn breaking over the lake the morning is at leisure before taking your flight back to the capital city Lima. You will make a short detour on the way to the airport to visit the funeral towers of Sillustani. On arrival in Lima you will be met by one of our representatives and taken to your hotel.
After seeing all the highlights of this wonderful country your adventurous tour ends today. Time for some last minute shopping or sightseeing in Lima before you are taken to the airport for your onward flight or journey home taking with you a lifetime of memories from this very special trip.
