Luxury Peru with Belmond Hiram Bingham

Description

Peru is one of the world's truly great tourist destinations and on this seven day tour you will see so many of the highlights. Beginning and ending in the capital city Lima, you will fly over the spectacular Andes to see all the impressive sights in ancient Cusco. Then its on to the Sacred Valley and up to one of the wonders of the world, stunning Machu Picchu, which sits above a cloud forest. This tour makes a great add on to any longer holiday in this fascinating South American country and will leave you with so many lasting memories.

Day 1
Lima

On arrival at the International airport in Lima you will be welcomed by one of our tour representatives and escorted to your hotel, where you will be briefed on all of your travels during your stay in Peru. The more affluent districts of Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro, which are on the coast, offer good nightlife and cafes all within walking distance. Limenos (Lima's residents) are friendly, and the city is filled with excellent restaurants - seafood lovers in particular should be sure to try a ceviche, for which Lima is well known.

Day 2
Lima

After breakfast at your hotel you will enjoy a half day guided sightseeing tour to the most attractive and important sites in Lima, the "City of Kings". Visit Lima's Historical Center, passing by Plaza San Martin, Plaza Mayor, the Government Palace, the City Hall, the Cathedral and its Religious Art Museum as well as San Francisco Monastery and its famous underground crypts known as the Catacombs. Your visit continues with a stop at the Larco Museum, for an excellent overview of Peru's ancient past as it holds the best private collection of pre-Columbian art in the country. You will have the chance to tour through this old Hacienda House in the Pueblo Libre district, which was built upon a pre-Incan sacred site (huaca), housing the private collection of a great Peruvian scholar: Don Rafael Larco Hoyle. After the visit you will be driven back to your hotel.

Day 3
Lima- Cusco - Sacred Valley

After breakfast you will be picked up at your hotel and taken back to Lima airport for your domestic flight over the Andes to Cusco. On arrival you will be met and taken to your hotel in the Sacred Valley. You will have the remainder of the day at your leisure to rest and allow your body to acclimatise to the high altitude. Later go out and explore on your own and try one of the colourful local restaurants.

Day 4
Through the Sacred Valley of the Inca

Today you travel with a local guide through the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Visit the impressive Pisac ruins and the colourful artisan market. The day trip finishes in the picturesque village of Ollantaytambo, site of another large Inca ruin. The town and fortress here are strategically situated overlooking the beautiful Urubamba River Valley. This major ruin site is the best surviving example of Inca urban planning and engineering. It is admired for its huge steep terraces guarding the fortress and for being one of the few places where the Spanish lost a major battle during the conquest. Spend the night in the Sacred Valley, before heading out next day to Machu Picchu.

Day 5
Encounter the majesty of Machu Picchu

Early transfer to Ollanta train Station to board the Belmond Hiram Bingham train that will take you to the town of Aguas Calientes. During the journey you will enjoy brunch and marvel at the changing landscape as you travel from Andean highlands to the beginnings of the jungle before finally arriving at the town of Aguas Calientes. From here you will board the bus that will take you to the citadel of Machu Picchu, or Lost City of the Incas, which sits upon the summit bearing the same name, and is one of the most representative and recognized examples of Incan architecture. Upon arrival you will have a guided tour of the Inca Citadel which is provided by Belmond & will be with others that came with you on the Belmond Hiram Bingham train. Brunch on board will be included. Walk through the different areas of the city: the agriculture and urban zone, featuring temples and dwellings; and the Intihuatana, or sun dial, finely carved out of stone. When you finish exploring you will have an afternoon tea at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge

Day 6
Train back to Cusco

Rise early today to take advantage of viewing Machu Picchu in the early morning light. This is the best time to see the 'Lost City of the Incas'. If you don't mind the uphill hike, you can climb to Wayna Picchu, which requires approximately four hours to complete, and allows for spectacular views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding areas from above. In the afternoon you take the Spectacular Hiram Bingham train to Cusco... pre-dinner cocktails will be served in the bar accompanied by live entertainment, and afterwards a 4-course a la carte dinner will be presented in the dining cars. You will then be transferred back to your hotel in Cusco

Day 7
Cusco City and surroundings

This morning will allow us to enjoy and appreciate the mestizo characteristics of the city through a visit to its beautiful and most representative buildings, such as Koricancha, or Temple of the Sun; the Incan street of Loreto, where you can admire the famous 12-sided stone; Ahuajpinta street, along which sit the remains of impressive Incan palaces and old colonial buildings such as the Cathedral; and the Museum of Colonial Art. Later, we will head to the City’s nearby ruins: the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, a magnificent example of Incan military power; Qenqo, a ritualistic site with subterranean galleries that form an underground maze; Puca Pucara, the red fortress; and finally Tambomachay, also known as the Incan Baths. After the tour you will be driven back to your hotel

Day 8
Departure or Extension

After breakfast today you will be picked up at your hotel in Cusco and taken to the airport for your flight back over the Andes to Lima. A guide will be waiting for you at Lima airport to assist you with your connecting flight or to take you back into the city where you can extend your stay or take one of many other tours, perhaps spending a night or two in the Amazon rainforest. This short highlights tour is a great introduction to Peru and will leave you with a lifetime of memories.

I had a surprise on my return flight when a gentleman asked to change places with me so that he could sit with his wife. His travel agent had messed things up and put him in Business Class with his wife in Economy! Nice swap!

I liked the check-up call before our flights and how personal the service was.

Flew to Lima

If visiting Lima then I would advise any passengers to stay in Miraflores or another town outside of the city. Traffic was horrific. A thirty minute transfer to hotel took nearly three hours. It was also very threatening and unsafe in the city centre, along with friends being 'mugged' in their taxi from the airport! . Our stay in Costa Rica was incredible. Thanks again Dennis. Great job!

Flew to Lima

I knew I wanted to go to Peru and see the Incan temples, and after speaking to Eric it was clear he knew the kind of thing I wanted and could provide. It was a very easy and relaxing holiday with everything laid on. There was a great balance of rest, great hotels, sightseeing and adventure - the time in the jungle was especially exciting! The fact that Eric had done the same trip made things a lot easier as it was very helpful to talk to someone with personal experience of that tour. I felt that I was in safe hands due to his personal expertise and experiences. It was a trip of a lifetime and it showed in how he spoke about it to me beforehand - and it turned into the same for me! .
