This wonderful 10 day Classic Peru tour takes you to all this fascinating country's spectacular highlights. Beginning in the capital Lima you will travel to colourful Cusco, see the Inca's Sacred Valley and spend an unforgettable time at Machu Picchu, one of the wonders of the world. Add to all this an adventurous stay in the Amazon rain forest and you can see why this is such a popular tour and one that will leave you with so many amazing memories
On arrival at the international airport in Lima you will be warmly welcomed and escorted to your hotel, where you will be briefed on all of your travels during your stay in Peru. The more affluent districts of Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro, which are on the coast, offer good nightlife and cafes all within walking distance. Limenos (Lima's residents) are friendly, and the city is filled with excellent restaurants - seafood lovers in particular should be sure to try a ceviche, the local specialty.
After breakfast you will be driven to the airport for your domestic flight to Cusco, where you will be met by one of our tour representatives and escorted to your hotel. You will have the remainder of the day at leisure to rest and allow your body to acclimatise to the altitude. In the evening, there are a few fine restaurants in the area that your Peru tour guide will recommend.
Your guided tour of Cusco and the archaeological sites begins with a visit to the impressive Colonial Cathedral, followed by the Temple of the Sun. From here you will be led to the outskirts of Cusco for a tour of the impressive archaeological site of Sacsayhuaman, later visiting the ruins of Puca Pucara, Qenqo, and Tambomachay. Cuzco is considered the mecca of Peru. This beautiful colonial town offers so much with its cobble-stoned streets, museums, churches and lively atmosphere. Among the more adventurous optional activities available are horseback riding around archaeological sites, white water rafting on the Urubamba River and mountain biking down to the Sacred Valley
Today you will travel with your guide through the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Visit the impressive Pisac ruins and the colourful artisan market. The day trip finishes in the picturesque village of Ollantaytambo, site of another large Inca ruin. The town and fortress of Ollantaytambo are strategically situated overlooking the beautiful Urubamba River Valley. This major ruin site is known as the best surviving example of Inca urban planning and engineering and is admired for its huge steep terraces guarding the Inca Fortress and for being one of the few places where the Spanish lost a major battle during the conquest. Spend the night in this small town, or one of the others nearby.
A highlight of the tour today when you travel to the station of Ollanta for your train ride to Machu Picchu. Board the train that winds through the spectacular Urubamba Valley to the end of the line - the village of Aguas Calientes, a frontier town nestled in the hills beneath Machu Picchu. Here you can relax in the natural mountain hot baths that gave the town its name. In the afternoon join a two hour guided tour at the magnificent ruins of Machu Picchu. Then have the rest of your afternoon at the ruins to explore until sunset returning to your hotel in Aguas Calientes for dinner.
Rise early to experience Machu Picchu in the early morning light. This is the best time to view the 'Lost City of the Incas'. If you don't mind an uphill climb of about four hours you can get to the top of Wayna Picchu, for spectacular views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding areas (not included & must be prebooked). Later return by train to Cusco where you will be met and taken back to your hotel. Tonight you can dine inside the Pre Columbian Art Museum, considered to have one of the top private collections in all of Peru.
Today there is free time to shop for souvenirs or visit museums and churches. Experience the sights and sounds of this beautiful colonial town as you walk around the cobble-stoned streets, chatting to the friendly locals and relaxing in one of the many cafes or restaurants. Those adventure tours including horse riding, white water rafting and mountain biking are also available today if you are feeling energetic.
After breakfast you will be taken to the airport for your flight to Puerto Maldonado. On arrival you will be escorted to the port for a 45 minute journey down the Madre de Dior River in motorised canoe to Posada Amazonas, in the heart of the rain forest. A 20 minute walk from Posada Amazonas leads to the 30 metre scaffolding canopy tower from where you see Toucans, parrots and macaws flying against the horizon, and exotic birds of all kinds land in the treetops next to you. A daily presentation on the Infierno ecotourism project is available every night from a staff member.
Tres Chimbadas is 30 minutes by boat and forty five minutes hiking from Posada Amazonas. Once there you will paddle around the lake in a catamaran, searching for the resident family of giant river otters and other lakeside wildlife such as caiman, hoatzin and horned screamers. The parrot clay lick is nearby and here you will see dozens of parrots and parakeets descend on most clear mornings to ingest the clay on a river bank. After lunch a boat trip downriver leads you to a trail designed by staff of the Centro Nape, a communal organisation that produces medicines out of forest plants. After dinner you will have the option of hiking out at night, when most of the mammals are active but rarely seen.
After another memorable breakfast in the Amazon rain forest return by boat, possibly seeing Amazon Pink Dolphins on the way, to Puerto Maldonado to catch your flight to Lima. With a collection of unforgettable memories, you can either take a flight back home or travel on to another magical South American destination. A guide will be waiting for you at Lima airport to assist you with your connecting flight.
