Visit Colca Canyon, Lake Titicaca, Machu Picchu and more...
Peru is probably one of the most rewarding countries in the world to visit as it has so many natural and historic wonders. On this comprehensive 15 day Andean Adventure tour you will see most of them. Beginning and ending in the capital city Lima you travel to Arequipa, Colca Canyon and Lake Titicaca , Cusco and the Sacred Valley and then onto the incredible lost Inca city of Machu Picchu.
On arrival at Lima you will be warmly welcomed by one of our tour representatives and taken to your hotel for a briefing on all of your travels during your stay in Peru. The more affluent districts of Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro, which are on the coast, offer good nightlife and cafes all within walking distance. Limeros (Lima's residents) are friendly, and the city is filled with excellent restaurants - seafood lovers in particular should be sure to try a ceviche, for which Lima is well known.
Today you are taken to the airport for your flight to Arequipa, a city that maintains a traditional colonial style and is more laid back in comparison with Lima. Arequipa was built from a very light coloured volcanic rock called sillar, so older buildings dazzle in the sun, giving it the nickname, The White City. The main plaza with its cafes and nearby cathedral is a top draw for visitors. Spectacular mountains surround Arequipa, the most famous of which is El Misti Volcano with its beautiful snow-capped peak. The rest of the afternoon and evening is free to spend at your leisure.
You will be picked up and taken on a journey to the Colca Canyon today, stopping at various scenic lookouts, where with a little luck you will see the Andean Condor, or other unusual animals in the landscape such as three different species of camelids: alpaca, llama and vicuna. Following your arrival in Chivay, where you have lunch, you have a light guided hike into the canyon. In the valley you visit the Medicinal Baths and Thermal Springs, where you can relax and swim before returning to the hotel.
Leave very early to spend more time in the Colca Canyon. Travel a rough, rutted road through high plains flanked by extensive Inca and pre-Inca terracing that goes on for miles. The canyon itself is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon and contains many pre-Inca terracing sites. El Mirador (the Lookout) or Cruz del Condor is located on the high cliff at the deepest point of the canyon. The view here is fantastic but most people come to see the immense Andean condor, flying over the canyon. Return to Chivay, visiting some Andean communities on the way back.
Following breakfast you will be collected from your hotel and make your way to Puno and Lake Titicaca. On arrival you will be shown to your hotel and have the remainder of the day free to prepare for the following day on the lake. Many of the hotels in the area are on the lakeside and offer impressive views over Titicaca's deep blue waters. A light dinner at your hotel is suggested for your initial evenings stay in Puno where the sunset and dawn views across the lake are simply stunning.
You will be picked up from your hotel in Puno early to take a two-hour motor boat excursion on the waters of Lake Titicaca and the Floating "Islands" of the Uros. The ancient inhabitants of the lake, known as the Water Tribe, have built their own islands by adding new layers of a type of reed unique to the area called "Totora". Their homes and boats are also made from this material. Visit Taquile Island and then spend the night at the house of a local islander to enjoy the hospitality of a typical Taquile home.
Rise early this morning in time to watch a spectacular dawn breaking over Lake Titicaca, which is the world's highest freshwater lake. You then have time to stroll at leisure through the quaint streets of this colourful island, meet more of the locals, find out about their unique way of life and shop for souvenirs. At 2 pm you take a motor-boat to return to Puno where you are taken back to your hotel.
Another early start when you are taken to the bus station to board the special Inka Express through the Andean highlands to Cusco with tours of Rachi, Andahuayillas, and Pukara on route. The drive is beautiful and the visits along the way are lovely as well. There is the option to upgrade your journey to a 1st Class train which also runs through the valley to Cusco. On arrival you will be transferred to your hotel. On either route you have wonderful views of the stark, beautiful countryside on this full day of travel through the high Altiplano region.
Your guided tour of Cusco and the archaeological sites begins in the afternoon with a visit to the impressive Colonial Cathedral in Cusco, followed by a visit to the Temple of the Sun. From here you are taken to the outskirts of Cusco for a tour of the archaeological site of Sacsayhuaman, later visiting the ruins of Puca Pucara, Qenqo, and Tambomachay. Cuzco is considered the mecca of Peru and rightly so. This beautiful colonial town offers so much to the visitor with its nearby ruins, cobble-stoned streets, museums, churches and lively atmosphere.
Today there is time to shop for souvenirs or visit museums and churches. You are free to experience the sights and sounds of this great colonial town. The more adventurous optional activities available in Cuzco today include horseback riding around archaeological sites such as Sacsayhuaman, Tambo Machay and Puca Pucara, white water rafting on the Urubamba River and mountain biking down to the Sacred Valley, perhaps visiting an Inca ruin along the way. Tonight enjoy the local cuisine at one of the many restaurants.
First stop today is at Awanacancha textile centre where we will be able to appreciate the work of the different Andean communities and native animals used by the artisans to make beautiful sweaters, hats and scarfs. Then you are taken to Pisac market and have lunch in Urubamba before continuing to Ollantaytambo town and archaeological site. Spend the night in this small town, or one of the others nearby, before heading out the next morning towards Machu Picchu, probably the highlight of the whole tour.
Take the morning train today to Machu Picchu that winds through the spectacular Urubamba Valley to the end of the line: the village of Aguas Calientes, a frontier town nestled in the hills beneath Machu Picchu. Here you can relax in the natural mountain hot baths that gave the town its name. This afternoon join a two hour guided tour at the magnificent ruins of Machu Picchu. After your tour you are free to explore the ruins on your own until sunset. Transport is provided to the base of the mountain, where you can return to your hotel in Aguas Calientes for the evening.
Get up early to take advantage of viewing Machu Picchu in the early morning light. This is the best time to see the 'Lost City of the Incas'. If you don't mind the four hour uphill hike, you can make your way up Wayna Picchu for spectacular views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding areas from above. Later you can upgrade to first class VistaDome train which allows for great views as you wind your way back to Cusco. Once there you will be met and taken back to your hotel. In the evening visit the Pre Columbian Art Museum, considered to have one of the top private collections in Peru.
Spend some more time in Cusco this morning sightseeing or doing some last minute shopping for souvenirs at the markets before being taken to the airport for your flight back to Lima. On arrival you will again be met and taken to your hotel in the capital city where you spend the last night of the tour. See more of the sights at night and try one of the top class restaurants.
After breakfast today you may have time for more shopping or sightseeing in Lima before one of our tour representatives picks you up from your hotel and takes you to the international airport to catch an onward flight or begin your journey back home. This Andean Adventure tour is a great way to get the best out of any visit to Peru and will leave you with so many wonderful memories.
