This Aqua Amazon four night luxury river cruise begins in the remote colonial city of Iquitos, in Peru, and you will be carried in exceptional comfort deep into the Amazon rainforest, along the Ucayali River, the Amazon’s largest tributary, as well as the four other rivers, each one rich in vibrant wildlife. Go piranha fishing, trek into the dense jungle in search of Amazon monkeys, three-toed sloths, crown headed hoatzin birds, toucans, macaws, anacondas and giant water lilies.
You will be met at Iquitos Airport and taken on a scenic one-and-a-half hour drive through the Peruvian countryside to the small village of Nauta where you board the M/V Aqua and settle into your over-sized suite. You are embarking on a spectacular adventure, to a place visited by only a few of even the most experienced world travellers, and your cruise director will give a brief talk about life on board, where you will go and what you will see on your Amazon journey. Then enjoy a welcome dinner with your fellow travellers.
Set out early this morning to explore the Ucayali River, the Amazon’s largest tributary. Sightings will include the slow-moving three-toed sloths, iguanas, orioles, and horned screamers, as well as many other birds. After breakfast walk through the village of Madgalena, a small community of 10 families, then guides will lead you through the jungle to a beautiful lake that is home to the world famous Victoria Regia giant water lily. This afternoon cruise the majestic Ucayali River, giving you a chance to see and meet native fishermen.
Enjoy a jungle walk near Hatum Posa Village. Deep in the primary forest, guides will show you the wealth of fruit trees and medicinal plants. Then travel by by skiff along the Pacaya River, to see the abundant life that is hidden in the deep rainforest. Watch saki, capuchin, and heavy howler monkeys, leaping from tree to tree. After dark you hear the Amazon rainforest symphony, as animals send their shrill calls across the tree tops. Use torches to locate night creatures, including huge caimans, before returning to the boat for dinner.
All day today and into the night you sail down the Ucayali River making your way back to catch your late flight to Iquitos. Before leaving the M/V Aqua a special farewell dinner has been arranged. Just minutes after being in the wilderness, surrounded by monkeys and birds and the other wildlife of the rainforest, you will find yourself sitting down to a final gourmet feast in the ship’s dining room swapping stories with fellow travellers about your Amazon adventure.
This morning see how people live along the Amazon - visiting the lively riverside community of Belen by skiff, in Iquitos. Here, where the houses and shops actually float during some months, you see the bustling food market of the entire Peruvian Amazon. Your afternoon in the remote city of Iquitos, accessible only by river or air, will not disappoint. This bustling town was once a rich centre of the rubber industry. Visit the Manatee Rescue Centre then stop at the San Juan Amazonian Indian Market for a last chance to shop for souvenirs.
