Beautifully situated on the mirrored lake of Anangu, Napo Wildife Centre is a comfortable eco-lodge in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon offering a haven for nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Highlights include a 50ft canopy tower which takes you up into the treetops and two of the country's most accessible parrot licks. This four day trip makes a perfect add on to any Galapagos cruise or visit to Ecuador. You will stay in thatched cabanas with lake views and the newly refurbished suites are ideal for families. Throughout your time at the centre you will be able to immerse yourself in local culture while having a wonderful wildlife experience.
Leave the Ecuador capital city of Quito for the 30 minute flight to Coca over the eastern Andes mountain range. After landing about mid morning you will be taken by road to Port Francisco de Orellana to board a comfortable covered motor boat to start a trip along the Napo river for about 2 ½ hours enjoying lunch on the boat. Along the way birds like herons and kingfishers can be spotted. After arriving at Napo Wildlife Centre take a peaceful dugout canoe ride paddling along a narrow creek that connects to the lake where the lodge is located. Good possibilities of seeing monkeys as well as large birds like toucans, parrots and macaws. Arrive at the lodge in the late afternoon and after dinner there's an optional cayman observation tour around the lake.
Early wake up to reach the best and easy access parrot clay licks in Ecuador, about one hour away from the lodge. A total of 11 species of parrots, parakeets and macaws can be seen. Then hike along a forest trail to visit the Quichua community of Anangu and share time with a family during their daily activities. Return to the creek and hike through a Terra Firme Forest for about 30 minutes before arriving at the second parrot clay lick where you will be able to find different species of parrots, parakeets and even macaws. Enjoy a packed lunch at the parrot clay lick observatory before returning to the lodge in the late afternoon.
Today you experience the amazing canopy tower on the Napo - a great way to see life above the forest floor. This is the second tower at the centre (the first is attached to the dining hall and allows great views of the lake). As you climb the 12-storey tower, you pass through different levels of the forest and emerge on top of a huge Ceiba tree. Here you cross onto a platform that is built into the tree. Flocks of colourful tanagers pass through the canopy, blue-and yellow Macaws fly past, in nearby trees Spider Monkeys search for fruit and the life of the forest canopy opens before you. In the afternoon hike along a trail to discover the forest interior, possibly finding lizards, colouful manakins and the unique Golden mantle tamarin monkeys. After the hike, explore the lake and creeks by dugout canoe and see Giant otter families
An early departure and your last exciting excursion as you canoe back to the Napo river. The creek may reveal new sights of Giant otters, Monk Saki monkeys and many other rare birds and animals. Then you transfer to a motorboat for the two hour return trip back to Coca and your short flight to Quito. Once in the capital city you can stay on, explore more of the country, take a cruise out to the Galapagos islands or head to the airport to catch an onward flight or begin your journey back home.
