You will see Colombia at its best on this short two centre trip around Santa Marta and Tayrona National Park. In the city you will enjoy walking tours when you will see all the sights and hear about the rich history. Then in the national park you can relax on the beautiful beaches under swaying palms and experience life in the world's highest coastal mountain range. You pack a lot into five days on this exciting tour of Columbia.
On arrival at the airport you will be met and driven to your hotel in Santa Marta where the rest of day is free for you to explore on your own. Santa Marta may lack the wealth of colonial landmarks of its westerly neighbour, Cartagena, but the charm of this unique city more than makes up for it. Take in the pulsating nightlife with a cold Aquila beer and Caribbean fish dish in one of the many restaurants.
Enjoy a half-day walking tour of the historical centre and the gold museum with a coffee stop. This tour is a perfect introduction to Santa Marta, the oldest Spanish Colonial city in the continental Americas, and you will stroll through the atmospheric plazas and narrow streets. Visit the Gold Museum to see gold and pottery objects from the indigenous cultures that inhabit the Sierra Nevada Mountains which rise up behind the city and walk through the Bolivar Plaza and the bustling streets to the Cathedral, Colombia’s oldest church. From here it is a short stroll to the beautiful Parque de los Novios (lovers’ park) where you can sip a refreshing cold drink in the shade.
Today you will be picked up and driven to Parque Nacional Tayrona passing along the foothills of the famous Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the highest coastal mountain range in the world. Then put your walking boots on and get ready to hit the coastal paths to one of the main beaches, where you can sit under palms and watch the waves roll up the shore or take a walk to one of the main swimming beaches. During the walk to your hotel look out for some of the Kogi tribes’ people who still live in the park and see an impressive array of flora and fauna.
A day of leisure . . . and there is no better place to relax on the beach and listen to the calming rhythms of the waves than Parque Nacional Tayrona. You are surrounded by a biosphere of tropical and deciduous forests, a population of nearly 26,500 indigenous people form tribes including Koji, Arhuaco and Wiwa, and the world’s highest coastal mountain range. In front is the Caribbean with its well preserved coral reefs, bays, inlets and fine beaches where you can relax in a hammock, or wander along jungle trails.
Your last day in paradise so make the most of it before you are picked up at your hotel and driven back to Santa Marta where you are dropped off at your hotel or the airport to catch an onward flight or begin your journey home. This short but exciting tour makes a great add on to any holiday in Columbia or South America.
