Colombia is an amazing land of contrasts and after being off the wish list for many travellers for some years it is rapidly becoming one of the highlights of South America. With its rich cultural history, amazing architecture, geographical diversity and the warmth and hospitality of its people, it’s easy to see why this fascinating country is becoming an increasingly popular place to visit. On this four night Coffee Region Highlights tour you will experience Colombia's wealth of cultural attractions, nature and wildlife in its diverse landscapes and the spirit of the people will stay with you long after you arrive back home.
Your tour begins in Manizales, a city in the heart of Colombia and not far from the capital Bogota. The coffee region for many people is the very soul of Colombia, its cultural epicentre. With every turn, a spectacular panorama changes your perspective, from the rolling hillsides of fertile coffee plantations to plunging valleys and bold mountains. Rural life continues as it has done for centuries harvesting coffee and fruits in this lush and fertile land. A visit to this region lets you experience its tranquillity while also offering the opportunity for adventure. Tonight enjoy an evening meal on the farm where you stay cooked with fresh local produce.
Coffee makes this region tick and after a delicious lunch you will start your private tour of the farm, which is set among stunning scenery, carpeted rolling hills of lush green coffee, plantain and yucca. Now it is time to see the plant that keeps the world energised up close and personal. With a tour of one of the plantations you see the whole process from seedling to coffee cup. You will learn about the trials and tribulations that face the regions coffee growers and how their whole way of life is affected by this simple bean. The owner was educated in England and is passionate about his farm. Relax in the afternoon before sitting down to a home cooked evening meal.
You will be picked up by your tour guide and taken from the far northeast of Quindio to the Cocora Valley, where the magnificent wax palms grow. As you enter into Filandia you know you are in the heart of Columbia's coffee region. See the brightly painted houses and discover how the people live in this unspoilt region. From Filandia you will drive to the Cocora Valley. Part of the wider Parque Nacional Los Nevados, the valley has a unique landscape like a lush version of a Swiss valley. After a lunch of fresh trout you will head towards Salento, a picturesque town with a number of fine traditional houses. Return to Hacienda Venecia for another home cooked evening meal.
A day at leisure in the Hacienda can be one of total relaxation, by the pool, reading under the shade of one of the balconies, watching humming birds flit from flower to flower or walking the grounds. You will encounter a plethora of birds and butterflies, see the workers in the pineapple plantations and walk past the pastures grazed by the families heard of Brahma cattle. You also have the option of two hours horse riding on the land. Whether you choose to relax or explore a free day here in this spectacular family run farm is a great way to spend your final day of the tour.
Some more time today to relax or explore around the Hacienda Bambusa before you are picked up by one of our tour representatives and taken to El Eden Airport at Armenia, for your onward flight or to begin your journey home taking with you a wealth of knowledge about the coffee growers of this fascinating and beautiful part of Columbia.
