Bolivia, a Fascinating Rainbow Tour

Description

Bolivia is simply superlative. It’s the southern hemisphere’s highest, most isolated and most rugged nation and among the Earth’s coldest, warmest, windiest and steamiest spots. It boasts the driest, saltiest and swampiest natural landscapes in the world and although the poorest country in South America, it’s also one of the richest in terms of natural resources. Bolivia has it all, except for beaches. On your memorable tour of this landlocked country you will see soaring peaks, amazing salt flats, steamy jungles and wildlife-rich grasslands. Unsurpassed beauty is also reflected in its vibrant indigenous cultures, colonial cities and whispers of ancient civilisations. This is exactly what attracts visitors, and with good reason.

Day 1
Arrive La Paz

On arrival in the Bolivian capital La Paz, you will be met at the airport by one of our tour representatives and taken to your hotel in the city. Relax after the journey then go out and explore on your own. There will be a guided tour later in your trip, but now is a good time to get a flavour of the city and try the local cuisine at one of the colourful restaurants.

Day 2
Tiwanacu

Today you travel overland for a half day visit to the Tiwanacu ruins. Tiwanacu was, during its heyday, the largest city in the world and it is considered to be the Cradle of the American Civilisations. The Sun Gate, the Monoliths, the temples of Kalasasaya, Kontiki, and the Akapana artificial pyramid are some examples of the advanced development achieved by this culture. Continue to Huatajata on Lake Titicaca to experience an Andean Roots Eco Village. Visit the Altiplano Museum, and meet the Limachi family, builders of the RA II and Tigris for Thor Heyerdhal's epic raft expeditions across the Atlantic Ocean. Relax at the Kallawaya Natural Spa experiencing the ancient methods and treatments for stress and later enjoy a candlelight dinner followed by a night visit to the Native Observatory.

Day 3
Sun and Moon Islands

Take a cruise today to Moon Island and visit the Sun Virgins Temple on Sun Island. You will see the Inca Staircase and sacred fountain and taste the sacred water which is believed to give eternal youth and happiness. Have lunch at the Uma Kollu archaeological restaurant before a visit to a small handicraft market. Then you take the hydrofoil back to Copacabana and continue to La Paz where you are dropped off at your hotel.

Day 4
La Paz to Uyuni Salt Flats

There is an early transfer to the airport today for your flight to Uyuni where you will see the incredible salt flats, the largest in the world. After checking in at the Salt hotel Luna Salada you will be taken out to the salt flats visiting the Thunupa volcano. After a packed lunch you are then taken to see the Coquesa Mummies. Dinner tonight is in your hotel, which like the others in this unique region is made out of blocks of salt.

Day 5
Uyuni Salt Flats

Today you are picked up from your hotel in Uyuni for a full day excursion to visit the Salt Lake and Isla Pescado. At a distance this island has the shape of a fish and it is located at the centre of the Uyuni salt pan. Nature has bestowed a singular type of flora on this place. The surface rocks contain fossils of marine algae and this is the largest island in the group that forms an isolated oasis-type ecosystem within the salt pan. Have your cameras ready as the views to the horizon are magnificent. Overnight at the Salt hotel.

Day 6
Uyuni to La Paz

This morning you fly back to the capital city and are taken from the airport to your hotel. In the afternoon there is a half day tour of La Paz and Moon Valley. La Paz is known as the City of Contrast and it is a unique blend of cultures and races and boasts breathtaking panoramas. On this tour you will see the city's native, colonial and modern areas, visiting an Indian market, a witch doctor's market and Moon Valley. Overnight La Paz.

Day 7
La Paz to Madidi

Today you fly to the amazing Madidi National Park for a three day, four night stay. The Madidi National Park of northwest Bolvia was created in 1995 and protects a full array of tropical ecosystems, from the high Andes to the Amazon Basin. Madidi's vast wilderness encompasses an amazing biological diversity ranging from huge cloud forest to dry tropical forest, humid lowland rain forest to Savannah, wild rivers to tranquil lakes.

Day 8
Rurrenabaque to Chalalan

An action packed day today. Take a boat trip up the Beni and Tuichi rivers to Chalalan and hike from the riverbank to the lodge alongside Chalalan Lake. After lunch swim or canoe in Chalalan lake before seeing a presentation about the Madidi National Park and San Jose de Uchupimonas, the community owners of Chalalan. After dinner at the lodge go on a memorable night hike along a trail seeing nocturnal rain forest life including frogs, birds, night animals and insects.

Day 9
Hikes and handicrafts

Today after breakfast you take a hike along a number of trails seeing all the region's medicinal fruits and exotic plants. Enjoy lunch then relax, swim or canoe on the lake. Later there is a trek through Wichi and Jaguar trails where you will be shown the materials used to make handicrafts. You will also see lots of exotic birds on today's excursions.

Day 10
Chalan to La Paz

Another hike this morning, this time to the Tuichi river port where you will be taken on a boat trip. Later return to Rurrenabaque to catch your flight back to La Paz where you will be met and taken to your hotel in the city. Another chance to explore this buzzing capital city and make the most of its restaurants and nightlife.

Day 11

Flew to Bolivia

You did your job but the American Airlines food was truly awful and their customer service not good generally. I would not choose to fly with them again.

I won't connect through Miami again if I can help it!

|
Flew to La Paz

Would not recommend Iberia longhaul. My seat did not have a seatbelt! It got sorted but shabby planes both ways.

|
Flew to La Paz

A complicated journey involving 8 flights to and around Latin America worked like clockwork

|
Flew to Santa Cruz

I would also like to congratulate Air Europa, after a very delayed start to my journey they treated all passengers very well and held back connecting flights to Brazil, Peru, Argentina and Bolivia operated by Air Europa for delayed passengers.

I will try to avoid travelling with American Airlines to South America via Miami (the Virgin bit was great) they certainly don't cater to vegetarians
