Full Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Mexico City

After arriving at Mexico City International Airport you check into your hotel in the city, the Krystal Grand Reforma or similar accommodation. Then the rest of the day and the evening is free for you to go out an explore, see some of the sights and try the local cuisine at one of the many excellent restaurants.

Day 2: Mexico City

Today you are taken on a city tour that includes the Constitution Plaza, known as Zocalo, surrounded by beautiful baroque buildings, among which is the cathedral, the National Palace and the headquarters of the President, where you can see murals painted by Diego Rivera. Make a brief stop at the Guadalupe Shrine then continue to Teotihuacan, named by the Aztecs as “the place where the Gods are born”. Here you see the Pyramid of the Sun, Pyramid of the Moon and the Citadel, all of which were built over the so called Road of the Dead. Lunch at a restaurant is included in the trip.

Day 3: Mexico City / Puebla / Oaxaca

After breakfast at your hotel leave Mexico City this morning and travel to the beautiful colonial city of Puebla where you visit the Santo Domingo church, with its stunning Rosario Chapel, one of the biggest works of the Mexican baroque art. Enjoy a restaurant lunch then in the afternoon you travel by bus to Oaxaca where you are staying tonight at the Victoria Hotel or similar accommodation.

Day 4: Oaxaca

In the morning visit the city known as the “Patriots Cradle” that includes the Zocalo, where the Cathedral and the Santo Domingo Church are located, then continue to the old Santa Catalina from Siena friary and to the local market, one of the most typical of the region. Enjoy lunch in a restaurant and later visit the famous archeological site of Monte Alban, a ceremonial centre built on a hill and rich in pyramids, tombs and sunken reliefs. Then return to your hotel in Oaxaca.

Day 5: Oaxaca / Tuxtla Gutiérrez

In the morning leave Oaxaca and travel to Mitla, an ancient Mixtec centre. Visit the archeological site, a place founded by Zapotec and also used by Mixtecan for their ceremonies in which visitors can see geometrical decorations with abstract drawings. You then drive for four hours to Tehuantepec where you have lunch and in the afternoon carry on to Tuxtla Gutierrez, capital of the State of Chiapas. Tonight have dinner and stay at the Marriott hotel.

Day 6: Tuxtla Gutiérrez / San Cristóbal de las Casas

After breakfast this morning you are taken to the Cahuare wharf to enjoy a memorable boat trip through the Sumidero Canyon. The altitude and the beauty of the place will make the experience unforgettable. After lunch at a local restaurant the tour continues to San Cristobal de las Casas, where you stay at the hotel Villa Mercedes San Cristobal. Then the rest of the afternoon and evening is free for you to explore on your own.

Day 7: San Cristóbal de las Casas

In the morning visit a typical local market where hundreds of indigenous people sell their hand-made products every day. The tour continues to the Baroque Santo Domingo Church founded in 1547. Later you meet some of the local communities of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan. The San Juan Chamula community is particularly linked to this church where ceremonies were celebrated that were greatly influenced by paganism.

Day 8: San Cristóbal de las Casas / Palenque

Leave San Cristobal de las Casas this morning for Palenque stopping on the way at the Agua Azul (Blue Water) waterfalls. The journey will take around five hours on a mountain road and along the way you will pass lush the vegetation of this Chiapanecan zone. After lunch in a rustic restaurant you arrive at Palenque and check-in to the hotel Ciudad Real. The evening is free for you to go out and explore.

Day 9: Palenque / Campeche

Today you visit the Palenque archaeological site to see displays of Mayan work made in stone and stucco. This area is known for being one of Mexico’s most beautiful places due to its ruins being enclosed in the jungle. The most important temple is the Temple of the Inscriptions, and here explorers discovered Pakal’s tomb with his famous jade mask. After lunch continue to Campeche and tour the ancient town, which is surrounded by fort walls and towers. Campeche has a Colonial mood thanks to its gorgeous houses and austere churches. After visiting the city check-in at the hotel Plaza Campeche.

Day 10: Campeche / Mérida

Today on the way to Merida stop at the Uxmal archaeological site. Uxmal means “built in three stages” and it is a typical example of the classic and post-classic Mayan period. After lunch in Uxmal you drive on to Merida, also known as the “White City”, which has Colonial houses as well as houses that date from the beginning of the century in the Arabic, French and Italian styles. Stop at Merida’s Zocalo and see the city’s main monuments - the Cathedral, the Government’s Palace, the Municipal Palace and the Francisco Montejo’s House. Then check-in at the Holiday Inn.

Day 11: Mérida / Riviera Maya

Today you visit the amazing Chichen Itza archaeological site. Chichen Itza was the Mayan capital of Yucatan and flourished between the 5th and 10th centuries AD. Here you can admire the impressive buildings of the northern and central archaeological sites, such as the Kukulcan Temple, the Ball Game, the Observatory, the Warrior’s Temple, the Convent of the Nuns and the Sacred Cenote. After a restaurant lunch drive to Riviera Maya where you stay at the Barcelo Maya Beach.

Day 12: End of tour

Today your superb Great Mexico tour comes to an end on the beautiful Yucatan peninsula. You may want to stay on for a few days in this holiday paradise and soak up the tropical sun before heading to Cancun International airport to catch an onward flight or begin your journey back home..
