On this exciting self-drive tour of Mexico's fabulous Yucatan Peninsula you will discover the real Maya's country, visiting all the important places in the area including colonial monuments, historic sites and famous archaeological ruins. Along the way you will drive through beautiful scenery and an idyllic beach is never far away. This six day trip makes a perfect add on to any longer stay in this popular holiday paradise.
Welcome to Cancun, a magic name that makes travellers think of white sands and turquoise blue waters. You collect your car from the airport, or downtown if you have already had a few days first in Cancun or Riviera Maya, and then hit the road to begin your driving adventure. When in this world class holiday destination the temptation can be to just relax on the beach or around your hotel pool and soak up the sun, but it would be a pity not to see more of this fascinating area.
Your first stop today is at Valladolid, the second most important city in the Yucatan. Here you can explore this colonial city then possibly visit one of the cenotes in the area before having lunch and heading on to Izamal. Here you will be able to see pre-hispanic ruins as well as more buildings from the colonial era. Then continue on to Merida where you spend tonight in another of the Yucatan's wonderful colonial cities.
Today you drive to Celestun, a park of around 60,000 acres which has an exceptionally beautiful coastal lagoon. It was officially declared a 'Refugio natural de la fauna' in 1979 and is a breeding ground for a huge variety of water birds which you can get close to on a boat trip. In this region there are also 234 species of mammals, many of which are in danger of extinction, such as the ocelot, jaguar and marine turtles. After exploring Celestun return to your hotel in Merida for another overnight stay.
Leave Merida this morning after breakfast at your hotel and begin the drive to Uxmal, where you will find the temperatures a bit cooler. Today should be devoted to visiting the fascinating archaeological zones but it is well worth taking time away from these world famous sites to visit Yaxcopoil Hacienda which is conveniently situated on your route. Overnight at a hotel in Uxmal.
After spending time this morning exploring more of the ruins in Uxmal you drive off heading to famous Chichen Itza. This is a rewarding drive today as along the road you can stop at some wonderful places including the pottery town of Ticul, the market town of Oxctuzcab and at Mani, considered as the pre-hispanic jewel of the region. You arrive at Chichen Itza in the early evening and check into your hotel.
Get up early today to avoid the crowds and discover the best of this famous and most important Mayan site. There is so much to see at this historic site and the only problem will be fitting it all in. After lunch leave Chichen Itza and stop to see the ruins at Tulum on your drive back to Riviera Maya and your chosen beach hotel. From here you can stay on and continue your holiday or head to the airport to catch your flight home.
