Description

Costa Rica is often called the Switzerland of Central America because of its comfortable lifestyle, peaceful democracy and overwhelming natural beauty. The country has a Disney like cast of creatures ranging from howler monkeys to toucans, the waves are pumping off the lovely beaches, the beauty is staggering and the sluggish pace seductive. Active travellers can surf, hike, snorkel and spot wildlife and on this superb and comprehensive 12 day tour you can experience it all. The country's incredibly varied topography means you can cruise the cloud forest one day, visit an active volcano the next, and finish relaxing on a hot sandy beach.

Day 1
San Jose

After you flight arrives at the Juan Santamaria International Airport in the capital city San Jose, you will be met by one of our tour representatives and driven to your hotel in the city. For the rest of the day you can explore on your own, dine out in one of many fine restaurants and experience the nightlife.

Day 2
San Jose to Sarapiqui

Leave San Jose early in the morning for the Sarapiqui area. On the way you visit the Ruins of Cartago, and learn about the history of this colonial city. From there you travel to see Irazú Volcano, Costa Rica’s highest volcano. The views and scenery are amazing and on a clear day you can see both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Continue to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, an area that’s covered in beautiful tropical forests, where you enjoy a boat trip before being taken to a private farm to enjoy a home-style lunch, hiking and the opportunity to visit a butterfly garden, serpentarium, frog sanctuary and botanical garden. Later arrive at La Quinta de Sarapiqui Hotel where you stay the next two nights.

Day 3
Sarapiqui

Today you have the morning on your own to relax in your hotel or arrange one of the tours on offer in the area. In the afternoon you will be taken to Finca Corsicana to visit one of the biggest pineapple plantations in the northern zone of Costa Rica. This evening will be at leisure to enjoy the facilities of the hotel or to arrange some extra activity like the night tour at La Tirimbina Reserve, a sanctuary for all the natural species of the area and while you walk by its safety trails, you will hear the sounds of the forest in the dark and your guide will look for nocturnal wildlife and teach you about the habits of the animals.

Day 4
Sarapiqui to Arenal Volcano

This morning your driver will meet you at the hotel and take you to the Arenal Volcano area. On the way you pass through the very different towns of San Miguel, Venecia and Aguas Zarcas. These are very popular as they all offer scenic views of the mountain. The major source of revenue in the areas is agriculture, so you will have the opportunity, according to the the season, to watch the workers growing pineapple, bananas and sugar cane.

Day 5
Arenal Volcano

The morning is at leisure for optional activities in the area, such as canopy tours, horseback riding, exploring the Venado Caves, floating down the rivers and much more. In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to take a walk through the lava trails of the volcano and appreciate how nature has found a way to recover the forest from lava flows. After the walk, you can visit the Hot Springs and take a dip relaxing in the mineral waters of the pools surrounded by tropical forest. Dinner is served at the Hot Springs.

Day 6
Arenal Volcano

Today is free for you to spend at leisure or to take one of a number of optional excursions or visit on your own the different attractions. Trips on offer include La Fortuna Waterfall and Venado Caves, or you can go river rafting, take a nature hike, go horse riding or take a boat safari. There is so much to see and do in this area and the scenery is spectacular.

Day 7
Arenal Volcano to beach destination

Today you will continue discovering Costa Rica as you will be driving to your selected beach destination, for a relaxing three night stay. Beaches in Costa Rica are known worldwide for their great combination of jungle and beautiful sand. The sunsets are something special on Costa Rica so have your cameras ready where ever you go.

Day 8
On the beach

This is the first of three relaxing days at your chosen beach location. You can chill out and enjoy the hot sun or take one of many optional excursions during your stay. Swimming and snorkelling are favourite activities and there are all sorts of water sports to enjoy. For the more energetic there are hikes and rides to many different destinations.

Day 9
On the beach

Costa Rica has around 300 different beaches along its stunning Pacific and Caribbean coastlines, each with a unique draw and distinct setting. Even on nearby beaches the sand can vary from white, black, or brown. Some beaches are full of shells or scattered with rocks; others are soft with fluffy fine sand. Some are fantastic for swimming, and others are better for surfing.

Day 10
On the beach

Warm waters year-round, an unparalleled tourism infrastructure, and limitless attractions spanning two coasts are the reasons Costa Rica's beaches rank among the best in the world. And since nearly two thirds of Costa Rica's borders are coastline, there are a whole lot of beaches to explore. Another day to make the most of the resort you have chosen.

Day 11
Beach resort to San Jose

After breakfast today you are picked up at your resort hotel to begin your drive back to San Jose. Depending on your beach location, the drive could take around four to five hours, but there will be plenty to see on the way. You will be staying the last night of the tour at your selected hotel in San Jose. Time to explore the capital before experiencing the nightlife.

Day 12

Not your fault but I will never fly American Airlines again. They were terrible. One thing that you probably need to make clear is that unlike most airlines these days you have to call to order vegetarian food and even then you're unlikely to get it.

Flew to San Jose

Whilst DialAFlight's service was impeccable Iberia's was not. A shambles really, with a poorly equipped aircraft which did not have working reclining seats on a night flight, awful food which made me ill and below par service overall.
