Australia is a wonderful country to tour by car and this trip that begins in Perth, takes you through Margaret River and Albany, and ends back in the big city is one of the best. Along the way on this five day tour you will see pretty towns, national parks, magnificent forests, a stunning coast with great surfing beaches, and vineyards. You will never be far from the ocean as you drive through picturesque scenery and will have plenty of time to relax in between seeing all the sights.
Pick up your rental car in downtown Perth or at the airport and begin your drive to Margaret River. Travel south to the pretty port city of Freemantle, where the America 's Cup Yacht race was held in 1986 then on to Bunbury before driving through the Tuart Forest National Park, to Busselton, a pleasant seaside town on the shores of Geographe Bay. End the day at Margaret River, well known for its award winning wines, fine food, pristine beaches and breathtaking scenery
The great ocean swells offer a real challenge to the surfers who come from far and wide to Margaret River and the town is home to many artists and crafts people. Today there are many places of interest to visit. There are several wineries nearby, a scenic drive through the Bonarup Karri Forest and the coastal resort of Prevelly Park, at the mouth of the Margaret River, is another very popular surfing spot. Further afield, you may wish to drive down to the south coast town of Augusta, and visit Cape Leeuwin on the tip of the peninsula.
Leave Margaret River this morning on your drive to Pemberton. Travel south to Nannup, a historic mill town nestled among the hills alongside the Blackwood River. Beautiful scenic drives through the lush countryside lead from Nannup to Pemberton. This town is the best place to experience the magic of the magnificent karri forest growing all around. The town stands on what was formerly Nyungar Aboriginal land and has a good discovery centre giving visitors a first-rate introduction to the region.
Today you drive to Albany, passing through the towns of Northcliffe, Walpole and Denmark. Walpole is picturesquely situated on the tranquil waters of an inlet and Denmark nestles on the banks of the Denmark River with magnificent forests that sweep down to the sea. Albany was Western Australia’s first settlement and was once a major whaling centre. It has lots of white sandy beaches and spectacular coastal scenery. In the town there are more than 50 historic buildings and many have become museums, galleries or restaurants
Begin your return journey to Perth today passing the towns of Mount Barker, Kojonup and Williams. The Mount Barker region has 30 wineries, big and small, that produce premium wine for every palate. On Mount Barker Hill, the TV Tower is the tallest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and from the lookout there are panoramic views from the Stirling Ranges to Albany. At the end of the day return to Perth and drop off your car.
