4 day self drive tour starting and ending in Melbourne and travelling to the Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island and the Yarra Valley. The car rental is based on standard rates which include insurance and unlimited kilometres. Melbourne
Pick up your rental car at the city depot or airport and begin by driving south to the Mornington Peninsula through the bayside suburbs of Melbourne. Spend some time exploring the coastal settlements and national park along the southern tip of the peninsula. Mornington is arguably Melbourne's best kept secret and some of the highlights are art and craft markets, antique shops, coastal and bush walks and koala and penguin reserves. The area also has much of Victoria's early history, fine restaurants and great golf courses. There are many good vineyards at Sorrento and great swimming and surfing beaches.
Today drive to Cranbourne and join the South Gippsland Highway through Koo-wee-rup and the town of San Remo before crossing the bridge to Phillip Island, home of the Fairy Penguins. At dusk they emerge from the surf, ignoring the onlookers. The island has a major wildlife reserve where you can see koalas, fur seals, pelicans, and many other sea birds. At the Australian Dairy Centre there is a museum the history of the industry and a cheese factory. Alternatively, you can relax on one of the beaches and soak up the sun. Overnight on Phillip Island.
Leave Phillip Island via the Bass Highway and drive through Pakenham, Gembrook and Launching Place and the towns of Woon Yollock and Coldstream before arriving at Yarra Glen. The Yarra Valley is richly endowed with some of the most beautiful countryside in Victoria. Distant blue ranges, rolling hills strung with vines, towering trees and pristine rivers . . . this area has them all. Take a hot air balloon ride and descend into a valley vineyard for breakfast, visit the Healesville Sanctuary wildlife park and drop in to one or more of the many wineries for a tasting.
The end of your short road trip today so make the most of it. There is a vibrant calandar of seasonal events in the Yarra Valley area and lots to see and do before you drive the 30 miles or so back to Melbourne and return your hire car. This four day self-drive tour will let you experience the wildlife and wineries of Victoria and is perfect if taken in conjunction with a longer stay in Melbourne.
