Vietnam Revealed

Description

Vietnam is a country blessed with a beautiful coastline, emerald-green mountains, breathtaking national parks, dynamic cities, outstanding cultural interest and one of the world’s best cuisines. This south east Asian country really has it all, and on this great 15 day tour from north to south, you will discover that it is a nation that's going places. Poor in parts but never squalid, Vietnam is developing at an astonishing pace and you will see so much of what's happening as you travel from Hanoi to Saigon stopping at beautiful Halong Bay, Hue, Hoi An, Nha Trang and Dalat on the way.

Day 1
Arrive Hanoi

On arrival in Hanoi in the north of Vietnam you will be met at the airport by one of our experienced travel representatives and transferred to your hotel. Time to relax and possibly go out and do some exploring or shopping on your own before an evening meeting with your tour leader and the rest of the group for welcome drinks and a briefing about all the exciting things that you will be seeing and doing over the next 15 days.

Day 2
Hanoi

Begin your discovery of Hanoi, Vietnam’s gracious capital, which has been the political and historical centre of the country for more than 1,000 years. Visit the Ho Chi Minh Quarter - starting at the Old Citadel, walk along beautiful tree-lined boulevards to Ba Dinh Square, site of the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the humble house on stilts from which ‘Uncle Ho’, ruled Vietnam until his death in 1969. Next visit the infamous ‘Hanoi Hilton’ - the former central prison - and in the evening enjoy a performance of Hanoi’s famed water puppets.

Day 3
Hanoi to Halong Bay

This morning you travel east to Hon Gai, the gateway to Halong Bay, passing fields of busy workers farming their rice using traditional methods of cultivation. Stunning Halong Bay always captures the imagination of visitors and on arrival you board your boat for a cruise out to the Bay, enjoying a fresh seafood lunch along the way. Considered Vietnam’s greatest natural wonder, Halong Bay boasts more than 3,000 islands that rise out of the sea to provide a spectacular natural environment. Visit some of the caves and islets then enjoy a sumptuous dinner on board before retiring to bed.

Day 4
Halong Bay to Hue

Today you rise early to enjoy Halong Bay’s stunning scenery. After breakfast, visit more of the spectacular islets and explore some of the caves that make this area so unique, before heading back to Halong City, enjoying a tasty seafood lunch on board. In the afternoon you are driven back to Hanoi and on arrival in the city you will be taken to the station to board the overnight train to Hue.

Day 5
Hue

Hue is a beautiful and welcoming city. As Vietnam’s capital throughout the Nguyen Dynasty, it was the centre of Vietnamese Buddhism and scholarship and the setting for some of the Vietnam War’s most bloody fighting. The city provides a unique window into Vietnam and its complex past. Visit the impressive home of the Nguyen Dynasty emperors, the Citadel, much of which was destroyed during the Tet Offensive in 1968 but is now being restored. Then visit the Thien Mu Pagoda, Hue’s oldest religious monument, alongside the Perfume River.

Day 6
Hue to Hoi An

After breakfast visit the magnificent tomb of the fourth emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty, Tu Duc. Then stop at an incense workshop and test your craftsmanship skills before a drive south to the beautiful town of Hoi An via the spectacular Hai Van Pass. This drive is considered one of the most beautiful in Vietnam and takes you through both rural and coastal settings. Take a late afternoon walking tour of the old town and see an old merchant house, a Chinese Assembly Hall and the Japanese Covered Bridge.

Day 7
Hoi An

Today experience life as a local fisherman when you are taken from your hotel to the jetty to board a private boat for a cruise through Water Coconut Palm Canal – a tranquil area little visited by tourists. Learn about the history of the area and the lives of the locals. Discover local fishing techniques and how to navigate a basket boat through the narrow waterways. Complete your morning with a sumptuous seafood lunch on board and in the evening dine at one of Hoi An’s restaurants or take part in a fun cooking class.

This will help them improve their language and interaction skills as part of their accredited training with the New York Culinary Institute. Enjoy a small tasting menu of some of the products bought in the market when you return to Street Cafe. Then take the short flight from Danang to Nha Trang where you stay tonight.

Day 9
Nha Trang

Today you are taken on a boat trip to the islands off Nha Trang – including a chance to swim and snorkel. Take the opportunity to walk around a local fishing village, as well as a enjoying lunch on the boat. Other options for your free time include taking a bike ride to the “Big Buddha” statue or the town market, a visit to the mud baths, relaxing around the hotel pool, or visiting one of the beachfront restaurants and bars in this beautiful coastal town.

Day 10
Nha Trang to Dalat

This morning leave Nha Trang for the cooler climate of the Central Highlands and the former French hill station of Dalat, a journey that takes you over the spectacular Ngoan Muc Pass. Visit the Po Nagar Cham Towers in Nha Trang, some of the best-preserved remnants of the Cham Kingdom, before starting this incredible drive. The Cham people occupied Southern and Central Vietnam before being overrun by the Viet people from the north in the 16th and 17th centuries. You arrive in Dalat with free time to relax before dinner at a restaurant.

Day 11
Dalat

Dalat was founded by the French at the beginning of the 20th century as a retreat from the constant heat of Saigon. Today it is a city with lots of character and faded French elegance. Take a city tour visiting the Central Market then stop at the Summer Palace of the last emperor of Vietnam, Bao Dai, which was built in 1933 in the Art Deco style. Later take a drive around the Xuan Huong Lake in the centre of Dalat and then enjoy spectacular views riding a cable car to a beautiful Zen Monastery and wander through its tranquil gardens.

Day 12
Dalat to Saigon

Head down from the highlands and visit a Kriang village in a valley below. Wander through the tiny community, where your local guide will be able to tell you more about the life of these people. Then travel from the mountains, stopping on the way to take a closer look at the tea and coffee plantations for which the Central Highlands is well known. The scenery then changes to rubber plantations before you pass a floating fishing village on Lake Langa and arrive in the late afternoon in Vietnam’s largest city, Saigon.

Superb customer service

Flew to Hanoi

I have used Sophie Larforge to book my holidays for the last 10 years I believe. I would never use anybody else as she now caters for our individual needs and is always very helpful to us. Also she gives us plenty of information on the places we are going to and if she hasn't been there herself, she usually finds somebody that has to answer any questions we may have. Thank you Sophie for coming up trumps again!

DialAFlight was great. Malaysian Airlines online check-in very poor. Stressful and ended up unable to choose preferred area of seating. Spoiled an otherwise very good service. I wouldn't choose Malaysian again.
