Belmond Oracella Jewels of Ayeyarwady

Description

If you fancy a tour with a difference around the fascinating country of Burma this eight night cruise is just perfect. Beginning in the capital city Yangon, formerly Rangoon, you sail off on an adventure on the ship Belmond Orcaella seeing amazing sights and enjoying memorable experiences on the way to Bagan where you hop on a plane and fly back to the capital.

Day 1
Yangon

You board the Belmond Orcaella in Yagon where the crew will show you around the ship. After breakfast you set sail leaving the city and passing an interesting landscape with small villages and farms dotted along the river bank of the Twante Canal, which connects the Yangon River with the Ayeyarwaddy. After a welcome briefing and lunch in the restaurant on the upper deck there's a lecture on heritage buildings in Yangon and along the river. Before dinner tonight enjoy a welcome cocktail party and meet the ship's officers. Tonight Belmond Orcaella moors near Bo Myat Tun Bridge.

Day 2
Danuphyu

This morning Belmond Orcaella sets sail towards Danuphyu as you enjoy breakfast in the restaurant or in your cabin. On a visit to the little town of Danuphyu, where the revered General Maha Bandula led a Burmese defensive against the British troops during the Anglo Burmese war, you visit a Burmese cheroot cottage industry and local tea shop. Return to the ship and continue cruising and after lunch there is another lecture, this time on Burmese poets and writers. After dinner tonight enjoy a Myanmar folk dance performance on the sundeck.

Day 3
Sailing

Belmond Orcaella sets sail toward Pyay early this morning and you will be joined by a famous astrologer who will be on board all day to read palms, plot star charts and tell you what your future holds. There is also a Longyi tying and Thanakha wearing demonstration on the sundeck. After a buffet lunch join a cooking demonstration with the ship's executive chef as you sail past the famous cliff carvings at Akauk Taung. This evening enjoy a pre dinner Longyi cocktail party on the top deck and later watch a traditional “Chinlone” (cane-ball) player demonstrate on the sundeck.

Day 4
Sri Ksetra

Early this morning, Belmond Orcaella sets sail toward Pyay. Then stop for a bus tour to the ancient city Sri Ksetra, with its unique cylindrical shaped stone stupas. Dating back to the 5th – 9th century, this city flourished during the rule of the Phyu. On the way back to the ship visit the impressive Shwesadaw Pagoda and see the imposing 10 storey Sitting Buddha watching over this important site. This afternoon relax on board and enjoy afternoon tea in the lounge bar. Dinner is served in the restaurant followed by movie night on top deck. Enjoy a showing of Wild Burma with popcorn and ice cream.

Day 5
Sailing & Gwechaung

Belmond Orcaella sets sail towards Gwechaung early this morning and after breakfast there is another lecture in the lounge. In the late afternoon join an excursion to the Gwechaung Fort, one of the forts Italian architects built in 1860 to keep the British at bay from Royal Burma. Then take a local boat to Gwechaung village and ride in an ox-cart for a first-hand experience of the rural lifestyle along the Ayeyarwaddy River. Dinner tonight is on shore at Min Hla fort, the site of a great battle during the 3rd Anglo-Burmese War in 1885. The ship moors overnight at Min Hla.

Day 6
Magwe

Early this morning you set sail towards Magwe stopping for a trip around a town by tuk tuk. Stop at a busy local market to experience the daily hustle and bustle then visit the famous Myathalon Pagoda, where people come from miles around for important religious festivals. Return to Belmond Orcaella late morning and cast off from Magwe. After lunch there is another interesting lecture then relax and watch the local scenery slip by as you sail on. Tonight after dinner you are treated to a Myanmar puppet show on the sundeck.

Day 7
Sale & Bagan

Today after breakfast there's a morning tour of Sale. Visit the Yout-Saun-Kyaung, a 19th century wooden monastery with exquisite carvings. Continue on by bus for around one and half hours to see some of the ancient sites in and around Bagan with an experienced guide, and watch the spectacular sunset over the marvelous Bagan plain. Lunch today is in the Sunset Garden restaurant in Bagan. Later return to the Belmond Orcaella for dinner on board.

Day 8
Bagan

Begin today with a tour of Bagan visiting the morning market of Nyaung Oo followed by the major temples of Hti-Lo-Min-Lo and the Shwezigon Pagoda. After lunch back on board in the afternoon there's a choice of excursions, either to the sacred Mount Popa, the traditional home of the 37 ‘Nats’ or animist spirits, or you can hire a horse and cart with driver for local sightseeing, or rent a bicycle for a private tour. Tonight join your fellow travellers for a farewell cocktail party and Elephant dance performance on the sundeck, followed by a delicious final dinner on board.

Day 9
End of tour

Today you say farewell to the crew of the Belmond Oracella and are driven to the airport at Bagan for your short flight back to Yagon where you are dropped at your hotel or the airport.
