Located on the banks of the Kinabatangan River, Borneo Nature Lodge is nestled among tropical surroundings and abundant wildlife. All the spacious rooms are air-conditioned and overlook the tropical greenery and in honour of the indigenous people, many of the decorative items in the rooms are authentically handmade, supporting local communities. The lodge also has a restaurant giving you the choice to dine indoors or al fresco and daily activities include river cruises, jungle trekking, bird watching, night walks, village walks, cave exploring and fishing. Then travel to an island and stay for a night watching the baby turtles hatch and make a dash for the sea . . . all the ingredients for a unique wildlife adventure.
You will be transferred from your hotel for your early flight from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan. You are met at Sandakan Airport and driven to Sukau through rustic countryside studded with villages. Then take a short boat ride to Borneo Nature Lodge where you check in and are given a guided tour. Relax by the river before embarking by boat along Sabah's longest river, Kinabatangan, seeing wildlife and birds in their virgin mangrove and rainforest habitat. Search for some of the primates species including Proboscis Monkeys as they settle down on treetops. Then return to the lodge for dinner.
Wake up to the calls of birds, insects and animals and take an early morning cruise up to the Kinabatangan River and on to Kelenanap Ox-Bow Lake for bird watching and wildlife viewing. Then enjoy a short jungle walk and experience the wilderness of Borneo before returning to the lodge for breakfast. The rest of the day is free for you to explore the surrounding areas or nearby village. In the evening, take a boat cruise along the river to see many species of flora and fauna of the rainforest and some of the nocturnal animals.
After breakfast return to Sandakan and take a boat trip to turtle island. It takes about an hour to reach Selingan Island which lies 30 miles north of Sandakan in the Sulu Sea off Sabah's east coast. This is the main nesting area for the green turtles. A day of relaxation for you to swim or snorkel at the island and after dinner go out with a park ranger to see the turtles laying eggs. Learn about their conservation and watch the collecting of eggs from the nesting site, planting them in the hatchery from where baby turtles scramble to the open sea. Overnight stay at the island chalet.
Today you leave the island and return to Sandakan where you are taken to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre situated in the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve. Here you learn about the rehabilitation of the young or strayed primates before taking a boardwalk trek through the lowland rainforest to the viewing platform to witness the feeding of orphaned orangutans. Lunch is at a local restaurant then you have a short city tour before going to the airport for your flight back to Kota Kinabalu and your transfer to your hotel.
