Southern Laos Explorer

Description

A land of Lotus eaters amid the bloated development of its neighbours, the mysterious country of Laos brings together the best of Southeast Asia in one bite-sized destination. The country retains much of the tradition that has vanished in a frenzy of bulldozers elsewhere in the region as you will discover on this great five day exploration of the south of the country with visits to the Bolaven Plateau and the beautiful 4,000 islands area.

Day 1
Pakse & the Bolaven Plateau

This morning you will be met at either your hotel or Pakse airport, if you are arriving on a flight from Vientiane, for a short guided tour of Pakse town and market, followed by a drive to the Tad Lo and Tad Fane waterfalls. As you continue on to the lush Bolaven Plateau, Laos' premier coffee growing region, you will notice a change in both temperature and landscape. Encounter some of the plateau's Laven minority people and spend the night in the rustic and charming Tad Lo Lodge, where you can soak up the serene surrounds.

Day 2
Wat Phou Temple Ruins

After breakfast, drive to Champasak and continue to Wat Phou, a pre-Angkorian Khmer temple and UNESCO World Heritage site. This temple used to be the capital of the once-powerful Khmer Empire and is set on the end of a hill, overlooking the surrounding countryside. From here continue to Ban Kiet Ngong, a small Lao village next to a nature reserve. On the edge of this reserve is Kingfisher ecolodge, where you will spend the remainder of the day and night relaxing with nature.

Day 3
4 000 Islands

Drive south to the 4,000 Islands area. At Hat Xai Khun village, board a small longtail boat for a trip to Khone Island, home to interesting fishing villages and check-in to your hotel - built around the old French hospital. In the afternoon, travel by tuk tuk and foot to the site of the only railway in Laos, and visit the beautiful Li Phi falls where you can sip on a fresh coconut and relax beside the rocky falls. Later take a boat trip in search of the illusive Irrawaddy freshwater dolphin, then return to your hotel to enjoy sunset in this tranquil water paradise.

Day 4
4 000 Islands

After all the travelling and sightseeing today is yours at leisure. You might like to hire a bicycle and ride around the northern part of Khone Island, along the palm-fringed perimeter path, past rice paddies, buffalos, quaint fishing villages, and remnants of the French presence. In the afternoon, relax, and ready yourself for tomorrow’s visit to imposing Khonephapeng falls, and your return to Pakse. There is so much to experience in this beautiful part of Laos.

Day 5
Depart Pakse

This morning depart Done Khone Island by small boat, for the 20 minute trip to Ban Nakasan village. Then, travel by road to the southernmost part of Laos, near the Cambodian border, and visit the imposing Khonepapheng waterfalls. These are the largest falls in Southeast Asia in terms of water volume and forced French colonials to build the railway bypass you saw on Khone Island. After time for photos, drive the two to three hours to either Pakse town or Pakse airport, for your onward travels.

Thai Airlines overall good but they did not have any food options for me on the way out so I was unable to have dinner. In future I will book vegetarian if I go with them. On the way back - my seat was broken and could not recline which was unpleasant for 13 hours in economy. Isla was superb. Very helpful and I will use her again. Brilliant girl.
