Description

Setting out from the neon-lit metropolis of Tokyo, this tour takes in Japan's most iconic sights and experiences, from a trip up Mount Fuji to a tour of historic Kyoto. You'll travel by bullet train and water bus, visit spectacular temples and peaceful gardens and return home with a new insight into Japanese history and culture.

Day 1
Tokyo

Your adventure begins this evening with an optional first-night dinner at a local restaurant chosen by your tour leader.

Day 2
Tokyo

Today you'll enjoy a tour of the city, taking in the beautiful Hamarikyu Gardens, the Meiji Jingu Shrine and the fashionable district of Harajuku, passing through the stunning new development area of Shiodome. The journey is half the fun today, as you travel on Tokyo's expansive railway system and take a ride on the water bus.

Day 3
Kamakura

After breakfast this morning you'll depart for Kamakura to explore some of the many beautiful temples and shrines, including the huge Buddha at Kotokuin temple. In the evening you're at leisure to visit a local restaurant or perhaps stroll along the beach, and your tour leader will be happy to help you make your plans.

Day 4
Hakone

After breakfast this morning you'll depart for Hakone. Along the way, weather permitting, you'll enjoy stunning views of Mount Fuji. In Hakone, you can choose to explore by yourself or join your tour leader. If you are travelling in July or August you have the chance to take an optional Mount Fuji climb – a tough but unforgettable experience.

Day 5
Hakone

You'll spend today exploring Hakone. You may like to take a short hike along what remains of the old Tokaido highway, which used to be the main road linking Edo (modern-day Tokyo) with Kyoto and Osaka. You'll want to visit the open-air sculpture museum, which features pieces by many world-renowned artists, set against a stunning mountain backdrop, and don't miss the chance to pick up one of Hakone’s famous "trick boxes" as a unique souvenir.

Day 6
Kyoto

After breakfast today you'll take a two-hour ride on the famous bullet train to Kyoto, Japan’s capital of history and culture. You'll spend the afternoon doing some leisurely sightseeing, including a tour of Gion and the geisha districts with a local geisha expert, giving you a unique insight into this hidden world. Afterwards you'll enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 7
Kyoto

Today you have a full day at leisure to explore the city, with your tour leader to advise and help plan an itinerary. Be sure to visit some temples and shrines, such as the exquisite hilltop Kiyomizu-dera or the Golden Pavilion, and spend some time relaxing in one of Kyoto's many Zen gardens.

Day 8
Kyoto

Today is your chance to take an excursion. You'll be given a rail pass which allows you to travel to the many nearby attractions, including Hiroshima, Himeji Castle, Nara and Kanazawa, which boasts the gorgeous garden of Kenrokuen.

Day 9
Kyoto to Tokyo

You'll take the Tokaido Shinkansen high-speed train back to Tokyo today for your final day in the capital, where you'll have time for some more sightseeing and to stock up on souvenirs and gifts. This evening you'll enjoy a farewell dinner with your travelling companions.

Flew to Tokyo

Having paid extra for premium economy I was gratified to find the amount of space was more than adequate. However on the return journey I had the passenger from hell in front of me who insisted on reclining his seat more than it was ever designed for, with the result that he seriously encroached on my space - for the entire 12 hour journey. There must be some way of dealing with this.
