Borneo Orang Utan Odyssey, Camp Leakey

Description

Situated deep in the jungles of Borneo's Central Kalimantan, Camp Leakey is a haven for orangutan lovers. This world famous orangutan research facility, where you will spend a magical time with the hugh primates, is only reachable by river, and you will travel there aboard a traditional water boat called a Klotok converted into your home for the next 3 nights in the heart of the jungle.

Day 1
Arrive Borneo

On arrival at Pangkalan Bun Airport, you will be picked up by a guide and taken to the nearby port of Kumai to board your Klotok for a scenic journey along the Sekonyer River. After lunch on board a local guide will take you into the jungle for the chance to spot orangutans and proboscis monkeys as well as all the myriad species of bird and animals that call the rain forest their home. Your accommodation on this tripTanjung Puting National Park will be on a klotok, a traditional wooden river boat designed to navigate the waters of Indonesia and named after the noise the engine makes - ‘klok tok tok tok’ The cabins on board the boat have fans and air conditioning with power provided by a generator, at 9 each evening the generators are switched off in order not to distrub the wildlife and power switches to the batteries charged by solar power during the day.

Day 2
Camp Leakey

Wake early this morning and head upstream where the jungle thickens and you can try to spot more wildlife from the deck! The first stop is Pondok Tanggui where you will arrive in time for daily orangutan feeding. Then return to the boat and cruise further up river to the famed Camp Leakey while enjoying a special Indonesian lunch prepared by your crew. At Camp Leakey take your time looking around the research centre and meeting some of the scientists, researches and rangers as well as the resident orangutans. Again you will trek further into the forest for the feeding session before returning to your boat.

Day 3
Rimba Lodge

After breakfast depart by boat for Pondok Tanggui for another magical morning of Orang Utan feeding. After this you will head to Pesalat. This is a Government sponsored site that is attempting to re-seed a part of the national park. It is amazing to see the work involved in trying to recreate rainforest that has taken thousands of years to develop. Your guide will help you chat to the local villagers working here. Lunch is served on the boat then you continue back to the lodge by boat with the chance to spot Proboscis monkeys high in the trees.

Day 4
Depart Borneo

Today your exciting trip to see the famous orangutans in the jungles of Borneo comes to an end. After breakfast at the lodge you are picked up by boat and taken back down river to Kumai from where you are driven back to the airport to catch an onward flight or begin your journey back home. This superb tour to see the orangutans makes a great add on to any longer holiday in Indonesia and will leave you with so many happy memories.

I won't fly with China Southern again. The most uncomfortable seats I have ever had the misfortune of sitting in. Wooden school chairs came to mind. Shame as they seem to be newish planes. Garuda were brilliant and so helpful.
